So, finally we have a date for the high street voucher scheme. What is everyone spending it on? I'm going to try really hard to only spend in small locally-owned businesses. I need some decent bras so might splash out on a couple. If I was organised, I could use it for some Christmas presents, too.

To be honest (virtue signalling alert here) I'll probably donate it to charity. We don't need it and I think it's a terrible waste of public money.

buckeejit · 18/09/2021 22:52

@hopeishere this is great but may be difficult to do. I'll ask my friend who runs a great local charity if she can accept it & get gift aid from it & maybe encourage her to ask for them if there's anyone stuck for spending it.

On the other hand, funding charities is generally better done with grants & part of me thinks local businesses would be better use of it. However the only ones id be tempted to spend it on are hardware stores who really haven't suffered through the pandemic.

I'd like to buy an Apple Watch if I was going to put it to something frivolous but only big chains seem to sell them. The other thing I thought of was a local farm shop who do great quality meat & fill the freezer

What is the High Street Voucher Scheme ?
I'm in the Republic and have not heard of it.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/09/2021 13:35

I'm getting bras too @mrsfeatherbottom.Grin

Perpop · 19/09/2021 13:38

I’m due a baby (yesterday technically) and am going to treat myself to a local spa day treatment or afternoon tea (in a locally owned spa or hotel!)

buckeejit · 19/09/2021 13:51

@LadyEloise1 it's just for the north. A bit of a silly way to get the economy moving by giving us all £100 voucher to spend!

@Perpop congratulations & good luck. That sounds like a perfect pick me up!

MadeForThis · 19/09/2021 13:54

Home heating oil?

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/09/2021 13:55

Good luck @Perpop.Flowers

BelfastSmile · 19/09/2021 14:06

I haven't decided yet, but I've decided I'm definitely spending it! (I already give quite a bit to charity, and I've decided to treat myself for once).

Will probably buy some nice yarn or crafting supplies; I'll definitely make sure to spend locally, though.

I don't think it's a bad idea at all; if it sees lots of shops through the next few months it'll save a lot of jobs and some will be repaid in tax. It depends on people spending it in local shops though, not just doing their Tesco shop.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/09/2021 14:08

I'm hoping the traders in St. George's market are accepting it.

spooney21 · 19/09/2021 14:27

Dh and I are giving dc some of ours to but themselves something. I'll prob spend mine on make up or perfume.

LadyEloise1 · 19/09/2021 14:33

Is it £100 to every adult ?
How much will that cost the Government ???

MyDcAreMarvel · 19/09/2021 14:46

It’s an excellent idea just too low really, the US gave thousands in stimulus checks. What did the rest of the UK get eat to ( get Covid).

MyDcAreMarvel · 19/09/2021 14:46

*Eat out

Perpop · 19/09/2021 14:50

@TooBigForMyBoots it’s in the form of a debit/prepaid card - so if the stalls take visa/debit then you can spend it there!

Cocolapew · 19/09/2021 15:10

I'm going to get a massage and maybe a beauty treatment, I'm stressed to fuck.
DD2 is going to a local boutique and DD1 will spend it on books and vinyl.
DH is going to a local motorcycle shop.

HPmagic · 19/09/2021 15:12

I'm due a baby so using mine and DH for baby equipment and clothes. Although wish I could use it for a lovely meal out instead.

£145 million apparently Shock
DavidRosesJumpers · 19/09/2021 19:47

I can't imagine giving it to charity works.

It's to stimulate the economy. Helping businesses keep going, helping people keep jobs is not a waste of money.

That it's nice for people is a happy aide effect.

I'm jealous! Grin

hopeishere · 19/09/2021 19:58

Could sue it for toys for a toy appeal at Christmas.

Unfortunately the economists think most of it will just go on day to day stuff and mainly to supermarkets.

ilovepixie · 20/09/2021 00:31

I'm going to get a tattoo with mine.

Cocolapew · 20/09/2021 02:22

@ilovepixie

I'm going to get a tattoo with mine.
This is a great idea! Unfortunately the one I use only takes cash 😣
mrsfeatherbottom · 20/09/2021 07:35

Love the idea of tattoos and massages. The place I do Pilates are accepting it so I could use it for that, as well. Restaurants are also accepting them so that's another option as there is a local restaurant we love and would like to support.

I've seen one place saying that they will give 10% discount if you use the card there, I wonder will more places do that...?
