Would you judge people travelling abroad for a holiday?

Puppalicious · 22/07/2021 16:17

Just that. My DH really wants to travel abroad for a holiday, probably on the ferry to France. I can’t help but think people would be very disapproving and am nervous telling my boss (I would have to mention it as people would get a foreign ringtone if they tried to ring me during my annual leave).
So…would you judge?

@MadMadMadamMim

Yes. I can't see why you would think your desire for a holiday abroad was worth the possible risk to other people.

This has been one of the problems from the start - people continually travelling across international borders and spreading a virus which has proved devastating. Both in health terms to many and in economic, emotional and social terms.

I'd wonder what was so fucking desperate that you couldn't just holiday at home for this year and why you thought you were special. It's divisive, isn't it? Many people will argue that you are entitled to a holiday/fed up with all these restrictions.

Other people will think you are selfish and silly for ignoring reasonable precautions against continually spreading a disease that can have devastating effects.

@Holidaycittage

I just can’t understand taking the risk of being a disease vector across the world without a really good reason

Cos of course it isn't in any other country yet is it, oh wait a minute...

Op asked if people would judge. My answer is yes. Op may carry a new variant back or forth or help create a new one.

I believe most people are being far too lax. They are following government guidelines and that is their legal right. I would not say a word to OP at work. I would keep my mouth shut and be professional. That doesn’t mean my personal opinion would not be influenced by her choice to go on holiday.

Sorry OP I didn't realise this was craicnet it came up in active and I didn't clock it until just now!!! So I can see my posts aren't relevant if you aren't testing the same.

Puppalicious · 22/07/2021 17:35

I’m in Ireland (this is posted in Craicnet) - I wonder are the people who would judge, Irish (I suspect so?)
Re testing & quarantine, as I said currently there’s none between Ireland and France:

Yes sorry OP cross post I didn't check the board!

Puppalicious · 22/07/2021 17:37

Not totally @name6785 , my family are in NI so aren’t going abroad cos of testing/quarantine . They went to England instead so I think actually increased their risk of bringing something home with them!

Not judge
But I think people that are are CRAZY !!!

Oblomov21 · 22/07/2021 18:32

No. Why would I?

Oh we’d judge. We’re judgy feckers. I’d be mad jealous though 😂 love a good trip to France 🇫🇷
Decorhate · 24/07/2021 08:30

OP, in terms of your employer, if you ended up having to quarantine when you return, you should ensure you have enough annual leave to cover that eventuality. I’m in the UK & if any of our staff were in that situation we would expect them to have planned to cover that possibility otherwise they would have to take unpaid leave.

I think that would be fair & save any bad feeling.

Puppalicious · 24/07/2021 08:44

@Decorhate , that is very much part of our policy, if you have to quarantine you have to take AL, even though we wfh. I do have enough AL although my DH is pushing me to go away longer than I’m comfortable with. I guess if quarantine came in we would just have to hot tail it back.

The more I think about it the more I’m getting stressed but we’ve just cancelled an Irish booking as I had finally agreed to go. It doesn’t help that France (the part we would be going to) will be no where near as warm as we’ve had the past week - if only we had been able to take the time off!

Wannabegreenfingers · 24/07/2021 08:54

I wouldn't judge, but I also wouldn't have any sympathy if your holiday got cut short or you had to querintine on your return. If you're happy with risk, enjoy your holiday.

M0rT · 24/07/2021 09:04

I wouldn't judge, but I'm quite self absorbed in general and tend to worry about me and mine rather than noticing what others are doing.
Are you sure you have to tell work your going abroad though?
Foreign ring tone could be you went up North to visit family no?
Just thinking of senior managers in my job and none of them are going abroad (or at least admitting to it).
I think your right that the optics are poor.
Also I am not going abroad so have not looked into rules at all but I heard yesterday about friends of friends who are stuck in Spain as they had Covid and can't get a negative test to come back as they are still testing positive.
So double check that before you go.
I do understand the desire to get away, I swear my house has been shrinking the past year!
(I'm in Ireland)

Donationwitheverypack · 27/07/2021 17:06

I wouldn't judge them from a public responsibility pov, but I would think it was unwise, simply because of the possibility of getting stuck because of changing rules/the need to isolate.

I absolutely will be judging any collegaue who are delayed returning from foreign holidays "unexpectedly".

memberofthewedding · 27/07/2021 18:02

Why would you allow people to ring you from work during your annual leave? Block their number or say you did not take your phone.

Ityru · 01/08/2021 15:49

In a nutshell this attitude is what has made me hate Ireland and want to leave it.
What ON EARTH gives you the right to stand in judgement one someone else doing something that is within the rules???? What has happened to Irish people???

CanICelebrate · 01/08/2021 16:05

No but I’d be jealous!

But this view isn't uniformly given across all replies so why latch on to it as "this attitude" that makes you hate Ireland and make you want to leave? (which you really should do if living here is so triggering and you're only going to see the bits that annoy you). It is one attitude expressed amongst many. You're choosing to see it as an attitude that is shared by all Irish people and that something "has happened to Irish people" (in reality there's nothing new in what you're describing and I'm not even sure it is uniquely Irish).

OP you sound really conflicted and concerned that this is going to cause you problems at work. It doesn't much matter whether randomers on the internet judge you but is a much bigger issue if you can't relax and enjoy your holiday or if it does cause you problems (and why is anyone at work phoning you when you're on holiday anyway? That's definitely a problem.)

Puppalicious · 01/08/2021 22:48

Well I checked in with my boss before booking, in the spirit of transparency. It was a-ok with him and he confessed that in fact he is thinking of booking something himself - I almost got the feeling he was secretly happy to hear it (I confirmed I was double vaccinated so of course maybe he was just happy to hear that as I know we’re getting our heads around how to return to office safely). I think there may be a small cohort of us who are just keeping the head down and saying nothing in my work while the very covid anxious/overtly judgemental are perhaps more outspoken. Fingers crossed it all goes well!

Ityru · 07/08/2021 00:16

This judgmental patronising I can't enjoy my life so I don't want others to enjoy theirs is extremely common in Ireland and it is making the place unlikeable for anyone who isn't a small minded sanctimonious arsehole.

Doyouavocado · 07/08/2021 00:24

@Micemakingclothes what are you talking about? How is it any different than going from Manchester to London!

No I wouldn’t judge, FGS this is here to stay, deal with it

theleafandnotthetree · 08/08/2021 14:55

I'm just back from a week in France and didn't think too much about whether people would judge me or not. Certainly no one said anything other than 'I'm jealous!' or 'have a great time'. I will say that if felt that French people, businesses etc were certainly a bit more relaxed about social distancing, mask wearing, showing your vaccination certificate, etc. which did make me feel slightly more wary of catching the virus there than here in the west of Ireland (though fully vaccinated). And of course then potentially infecting other people. I wouldn't judge someone for judging me to be honest, that would be their right, especially if they have been super careful themselves

theDudesmummy · 09/08/2021 10:05

We are in Croatia right now, it is great. the rates here are way lower than the west of Ireland, where we live, so I don't feel guilty at all. Will wear a FFP3 mask on plane on way home as I did coming out.

tazzy73 · 10/08/2021 00:05

I've booked a holiday, it's 3 months away. I was going to wait till next year and I just thought fec it.
I've worked 50 hrs a week since the beginning of the pandemic and I need this, a break. I'm frontline, I'm either in work or home tired so this holiday is for me. Fully vaccinated since beginning of February, I'll get the booster if needed when I get my flu jab.
I'm going to fill my kindle, relax in the sun, have some vino and read.
And if anyone begrudges it, well that's on them.
If the lockdown stops me going, I'll deal with it.
So if anyone wants to go away, then seize the day, wash your hands and keep the masks on. That's what l will be doing.
