Moving to Ireland

I'mplanning to move back to Ireland at some point, hopefully this summer.
My question is does anyone have experience of bringing a UK car?
I drive a small old banger probably worth £1,000.
A quick Google tells me it will cost more than the car is worth to import it.
Can anyone advise Smile.

If you already own the car while resident in the UK for at least 6 months then you won't have to pay anything. I lived in UK for years and when we moved back to Ireland I brought my car with me. I didn't pay anything at all, just needed to have my documentation.

here's a link

Also wanted to add, if you're financially able to upgrade your car now so that you've got it 6 months before you move then I would! You have far better spec and value cars in UK than in Ireland so would be worth your while.

Oh, that's great to hear. Thanks Life
So I'd only have to register in Ireland to get Irish plates?

And great advice about upgrading, I'd like something bigger.

Yes if you click on that link you should see the details.
You take your car to an NCT centre along with all your paperwork and they'll sort it for you. They'll give you the Irish registration and then you go and get your new plates.
Good luck!

You might want to check that the rules haven't changed since Brexit. If they haven't, it is quite straightforward as long as you have paid tax on it when you bought it and have had it for 6 months.

That's great, thank you both, really helpful Smile

I had to pay over 3000 euro to bring my car from UK to Ireland. But I got most of it back after providing proof that I had owned it for over 6 months, and was planning to live in Ireland permanantly.

Late to this, but as had been said, if you've owned the car for six months you don't have to pay anything.

I turned up with all the required documents numbered from 1 to about 15 (!) at the registration office. I was complimented on my efficiency and everything went smoothly.
