Could somebody please explain to me in plain English what this is about please.
What information do they want to lock up for 30 years and why ?
I know the legislation has been passed in the Dail and there are severe misgivings about it.

Following from UK because, to my shame, I haven't been following closely enough. Seen Simon Coveney appearing to argue it was a legal technicality to make access easier in the future. But other people I respect saying that's a pile of shit and it just means more secrecy.

I think it's access to the whole enquiry that will be sealed. No one will have access to the records except those named in it and still alive. This will be managed by Tusla.

It means that all the findings and records stay confidential (and hidden) And can't be used for research or study by academics.

The President signed it into law Sad

I don't like Michael D.
He is, in my opinion, a smoked salmon socialist.
All talk too.

This is just so sad. They are saying it's to protect privacy which is just bullshit. This country hates women and this is more proof of that.

None of the survivors have any faith in Tulsa - look at their track record.

It just makes the survivors feel like they did at the time - shameful and secrecy.

As I understand it - happy to be corrected- there is a similar situation for Stasi files in Germany.

Blogdog · 26/10/2020 17:12

To be fair to Michael D there are limited grounds under which he can refuse to sign a bill, and it sounds like this didn’t qualify. He issued a statement after signing in which he practically encourages someone to challenge the bill in court:

Michael D Higgins statement

Thank you @Blogdog

This was a well known pending legal hot potato put on the long finger for many years but subsequent governments...and has landed in the lap of the greens. No one better than Irish politicians to kick the can down the road if no votes in it.
