I don't believe it, would it ever go away!

The government can't stop transmission, only people staying away from each other can do that.

They could have enforced rules, but they didn’t.

Now quarantine is difficult to enforce, yes. But the pub violations, the bouncy castles, the raves, the gatherings, anything done in public was possible.

If you don’t enforce, people don’t take it seriously.

Yup, loads of parents at my kids school organising playdates and sleepovers, fgs. Bringing the new digits

Yup, loads of parents at my kids school organising playdates and sleepovers, fgs. Bringing the new doggies down to the school gates at pick up time and all the kids are swarming round them, social distancing forgotten in the excitement of seeing the dogs. People are muppets!

anomletteandaglassofwine · 19/10/2020 19:56

The enforcement is difficult because the guards don't have the powers but they also say they don't want them, it would fundamentally change their relationship with the public, from policing by consent. I agree that they should definitely be spending more resources on stopping gatherings rather than road blocks that just infuriate the public, but in the end people have to take responsibility. The lack of common sense is staggering.

JaneJeffer · 19/10/2020 21:15

Micheál rambles way too much.

eggandonion · 19/10/2020 21:20

We should have been level five sooner, despite Leo being cross with Dr Tony.

I can't wait until bubbles and pods don't exist any more.

We'll be back to square one by Christmas.

Totally agree. There wasn't much on enforcement in Micheals announcement this evening. Some people need to have this enforced to get the message through time will tell if tonight's speech will be enough to get through to people. I feel so so sorry for all the businesses across so many sectors that have to close on Wednesday again..
eggandonion · 19/10/2020 22:15

Everyone seemed to be able to call Joe about pubs and parties, maybe if there was an actual authority places could be reported to.
Like communist era secret police.

It's very frustrating, after the good work back in spring.

I feel so desperately sorry for anyone who's now out of work for the next 6 weeks (presuming they'll even return to work after that) My god the thought of having to do it all again, but from a worse starting point than last time and with Christmas looming... it just must be awful Sad I feel so guilty that both DH & I are completely unaffected (financially) We will of course try to shop local for presents etc but I'm sure this is a drop in the ocean. People's whole livelihoods destroyed, the mental anguish of that will be hard to measure. Off the scale I'd say. This better bloody well work.

Radyward · 19/10/2020 22:39

Eggandonion are u advocating spying and reporting .ie busybodies being lauded for telling tales ?? I'm sure you mean just keeping the stupid idiots having monster partys but that type of society is absolutely abhorrent .

IrishMamaMia · 19/10/2020 22:45

I agree @Radyward I think OP needs to read up on their 20th century European history if they think that's a good idea.

eggandonion · 19/10/2020 23:10

I'm very bold, advocating telling tales. But I'm also frustrated as I am out of work again.
I will spend my time learning my twentieth century history, Cork hunger strike documentary on Wednesday looks really interesting.

Well I do hope the situation improves as soon as possible, that the measures work quickly and you can find work.

321mamma · 19/10/2020 23:20

I don't understand the 5k rule & how that will be enforced... Did they have powers last lockdown? DH travels outside the county for work (essential) & has never been stopped... I'd imagine the Gardaí will be even less visible now with the dark mornings & evenings & with the winter weather?! I may be wrong though!

CoFifi · 19/10/2020 23:26

@anomletteandaglassofwine I agree completely. It's not the government's fault. People need to take personal responsibility.

On my close knit road, everyone is breaking the rules. And these were people who followed the first lockdown to the letter.

There have been people visiting from the uk not quarantining properly and then going to a wedding, people visiting from other counties, people going to other counties, pretty much everyone seems to be receiving visitors and one house even got a new au pair from Spain!!! If this is just a small slice of Ireland what is everyone else up to??

I know ^^ sounds like I'm an awful curtain twitcher but this is info they've passed on to me themselves. Grin

Radyward · 19/10/2020 23:26

Eggandonion. I cant blame you - its soo frustrating. We are both private sector but holding on TG . Where do the public sector think their pay comes from.?? Small little businesses are the life blood of towns . Just awful

SionnachRua · 19/10/2020 23:28

Just in case anyone is trying to shop local, /r/Ireland are putting together an Irish Christmas market (basically a list of Irish businesses). Highly recommend checking it out, I've found some beautiful things already!

Thanks Sionnach (also, excellent name). Conor Pope had a long list a couple of weeks ago too - www.irishtimes.com/news/consumer/click-for-home-the-best-irish-websites-for-online-shoppers-1.4351678

Thanks!

And MotherForkinShirtBalls

Getting cracking on Christmas shopping once DH gets paid on Friday

eggandonion · 19/10/2020 23:59

Our town was recovering from recession, pre covid. There are a lot of small businesses in the industrial estates, but shops closing now - will they be able to reopen without Christmas? And Christmas pays the bills in January and February.
If they reopen early December they will be crowded, and the infection cycle will start again.

I am genuinely puzzled. What result do Micheal Martin et al want after 6 weeks ? Do they think it will be magically eradicated and they will be lauded as our saviours ?? I mean its absolute insanity- What is city west there for ? Private hosps rented for millions ? I mean - They just cant be straight about it. Oh let's lock down, ruin peoples lives -The old and young of this country - who even invented lockdown? Who said it was even effective ? We all knew it wasn't after Wuhan . Just follow other govt.s models with no independent thought. Calling Tony holohan the nations favourite daddy calling us to order made me physically Ill when it was all over twitter early on. Deaths are just so low. Who are they fooling ? People are surviving. I am so worried for ordinary working families just trying to live and pay mortgages. Nphet are clueless. So.out of touch as is the Govt.

Just to add. I was so on for restrictions last march. My god Bergamo was just terrifying . Now our own kids future is terrifying

IrishMamaMia · 20/10/2020 00:38

At this stage in the pandemic, having another lockdown, I think the government should be really really clear about what the end goal is. At least schools are staying open.
