I don't believe it, would it ever go away!

Considering how many people have returned from London this week for Christmas, far less than in a normal year granted, but I know of quite a few, what are the chances that this new strain is here already? NPHET must be testing their hair out over this.

7Days · 19/12/2020 20:15

There are lots of new strains though. I don't think it has been proven yet that this one is worse - it's possible it's just media click baiting.
Hopefully.

anomletteandaglassofwine · 19/12/2020 21:36

It's not worse but it is much more easily spread than the form we have here, 70% more transmissible according to the UK govt.

halcyondays · 19/12/2020 23:39

Still no word from the Executive. What are they playing at?
Everywhere else has met today and made a decision except them. It was always a terrible idea to let people travel all over for Christmas and even worse with this new strain. But people will be getting ready to travel in a couple of days and they need to decide now.

halcyondays · 20/12/2020 00:35

No change to Christmas rules Angry
Can’t believe it. And schools going back at the usual time.

Hospitals already over 100% capacity for the last 5 days and they allow 5 days of Christmas mixing and people to being the new strain over if it’s not here already.

hopeishere · 20/12/2020 09:01

Just because there is no change to to "rules" it doesn't mean people can't use some common sense!

Waiting for the NI executive to make a decision is pointless.

FionaMacCool · 20/12/2020 09:05

Exactly- use your common sense or cop on.

I have vulnerable family members that I really wanted to spend Christmas with (possibly last Christmas with one).

Based on the newest info, we're going to do an at home, small christmas here. Have a notion of driving the 70minutes on Christmas morning, just to say hello through the window, and come home again in time for lunch. Not what I want, but, so be it.
Couldn't forgive myself if I passed it along to them.

SilverLiningSearching · 20/12/2020 09:22

The Dutch are banning flights from the UK to stop the new strain.

halcyondays · 20/12/2020 09:47

I am using my common sense, it’s other people not using theirs that worries me.

halcyondays · 20/12/2020 09:47

@SilverLiningSearching

The Dutch are banning flights from the UK to stop the new strain.
Very sensible of them.
HaHaVeryBunny · 20/12/2020 11:20

Yep, the Dutch government are entirely right to ban fights from the UK. We are in a unique position in Europe of being an Island nation, giving us better control over our borders unlike most of Europe which is Landlocked.
But the government won't do it, ignoring scientific advice and by doing so putting many lives at risk which could be prevented.
Pathetic.

LadyEloise · 20/12/2020 11:54

Belgium too are banning flights and trains originating in UK.

Our government won't do it !

Remember Cheltenham Angry

SilverLiningSearching · 20/12/2020 12:15

I am in UK and know someone from a tier 3 area travelling to Cork to stay with family over Christmas. How many more will be doing the same? Decisive action needs to be taken by the Irish government.

anomletteandaglassofwine · 20/12/2020 13:59

16 flights from London to Dublin today apparently

Candoolili · 20/12/2020 14:03

I’d say it’s over here already, for sure

anomletteandaglassofwine · 20/12/2020 14:07

Looks like the govt might actually do something, but will people just fly into Belfast instead I wonder

HaHaVeryBunny · 20/12/2020 14:33

God l hope so that the government are considering a Ban from the UK, Donegal has the highest rates in lreland at the moment. But the vile Arlene will continue to metamorphorically suck Johnsons cock for votes.

halfpasteleven · 20/12/2020 15:29

Ban for flights to be reviewed after 48hrs on RTÉ news website

HaHaVeryBunny · 20/12/2020 16:03

Yeah, it looks that way, people will fly into Belfast and go down south into Ireland, which thankfully has one of the lowest cases in the EU due to restrictions. It will not change unless Arlene and her pathic attempts are brought into line, there are people being treated in an A+E ambulance carpark due to her. She won't ban fights from the UK. Her reputation as a Unionist matters more to her, than any lifes she could save.
Fuck her.

eggandonion · 20/12/2020 16:17

I assume cargo and mail flights are going ahead. I know someone flying to Belfast from Yorkshire today, so he should be ok. Someone else was expecting his son and Dil to fly from Scotland to visit in Cork. They have been wfh in a small apartment all year. Wfh is ok if you have dedicated work space, not if you have to sleep in your office.

anomletteandaglassofwine · 20/12/2020 17:25

764 cases today, that's a crazy increase in a matter of days

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 20/12/2020 17:44

I was expecting things to get worse in January, not this soon. This is very worrying.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 20/12/2020 17:51

Also, I wish politicians would have the desire/will/gumption to agree and implement an all-island approach to the Covid crisis. It's in all our interests.

LadyEloise · 20/12/2020 18:05

I was thankfully wrong. The government have banned flights and ferries from UK.
Now all we need is the all Ireland approach.
Arlene are you listening.

Petronelle · 20/12/2020 18:34

IsFuzzy they took an all island approach during the BSE crisis. You would think saving lives would be more important than saving the beef industry.
