There was a woman on a local FB group asking about going down to Penney's the other day - like, she couldn't just wait a week for Primark to open again. This lockdown is a joke - the number of 'essential' shops open is mad! No wonder the numbers have stagnated.

Emeraldshamrock · 06/12/2020 09:02

Residents are visiting already from NI.
I know a group 8 ladies they arrived 9an on Saturday morning.
People are nuts. When the pubs in Dublin closed People were getting a bus to the bording county for a pint.
The photos on Henry St were shocking Saturday.
I have done the majority online.
I'm planning a shopping trip Wednesday early hopefully to avoid crowds.

halfpasteleven · 06/12/2020 09:02

It's hard to see this ending well. I think for every establishment that adheres to the rules, there will also be the ones that are more relaxed about them.
I heard a doctor on the radio a couple of weeks ago before there was a date for restaurants to reopen and when asked if she would go for dinner if they reopened for December she said definitely not.
The virus hasn't gone away, numbers were lower because all these places including shops were closed- it has to spike again when there are people gathering indoors again for longer than 20 minutes.

TheKeatingFive · 06/12/2020 09:03

Well they couldn’t get their shit together to coordinate lockdowns, so what did they expect would happen?

I’m going north on Stephens day to see my parents regardless of what anyone say I can do. They aren’t going to close the border, politically they can’t.

I’ve been prevented from seeing my family since mid September, so there really is a limit to what governments can ask of people. My limits have been reached.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 06/12/2020 09:30

I would call that an essential trip TheKeatingFive

LadyEloise · 06/12/2020 09:56

Did anyone see the photos of Regent's Street in London yesterday - and all the young people outside Harrods - an organised event methinks. Utter madness. Sad
So many are making an effort but selfish idiots keep the numbers up.

Emeraldshamrock · 06/12/2020 11:44

@TheKeatingFive You're dead right.
It is disheartening sticking to the rules and missing time with loved ones when you see photographs packed with people doing what they like.

Emeraldshamrock · 06/12/2020 11:47

Did anyone see the photos of Regent's Street in London yesterday Shock Wow.
I thought Henry st was bad yesterday.

Numbers up with a virus with. 99.8% survival rate. I have had enough. Govt control .hospitals are not over ran
No numbers will be good enough for nphet. It's a new reset and world order. Told what to do. When to do it . No independent thought allowed. Sorry I have followed all guidelines.people with differing opinions are allowed. I feel like screaming when people blame young people. Like sorry are they being asked to give up any sort of social life for years!!! At first it was to flatten the curve. What is at play here??I'm visiting parents now end of. Hospitals are absolutely not over ran and never were
Not a word about adult disability service cuts or cancer deaths. Just awful. The narrative and sheep mentality is being fostered. Of course level 5 will work as holohan will make sure he is endorsed
I am horrified at the NH residents thrown as human test subjects - of the 1300 people used in the clinical trials none were over 65 with lowered immunity. I would stake my life that any deaths in NH from the vaccine will be hushed.. I am not a covid shamer or an anti vaxxer.i will not criticise anyone in how to live their lives which is now a Free for all. My business is not your business but mine end of. People need to wind their necks in and start asking out govt and overlords proper questions that need asking

That is quite an allegation!

It's absolutely normal when trialling new vaccines to choose healthier people to test first. Other groups are then tested. This isn't a conspiracy against an older, frailer population, it's designed to protect them. In addition, underlying conditions or comorbidities can be confounding factors that make trial results more difficult to interpret.

In fact, in the recent Oxford Phase II trials, 240 participants (out of a total of 560) were aged 70 or over. Nonetheless, the scientists involved are very aware that this does not represent the nursing home population and are addressing this. Below is an excerpt from their recent paper in The Lancet.

"The selection of participants aged 70 years and older, with a median age of 73–74 years between dose groups and with few comorbidities, might not be representative of the general older population, including those living in residential care settings or older than 80 years. Early phase studies in older adults require healthy volunteers to be enrolled for safety assessments, and recruitment to the study occurred during a period of national lockdown when more susceptible individuals were advised by Public Health England to self-isolate. Therefore, we excluded volunteers with substantial comorbidities or clinical frailty. Larger studies are now underway to assess immunogenicity, safety, and efficacy in older adults with a wider range of comorbidities."

Yes, encourage people to ask "proper questions ", that's great. But maybe also encourage people to do their research and to inform themselves before throwing out wild accusations.

Well said, LizzieAnt

eggandonion · 07/12/2020 17:37

I think there may be an issue, vaccine tests were run in children's homes in the mid twentieth century. It could be argued that they were a good place , institutional care, susceptible to certain illnesses...or alternatively a population easy to observe and control. I feel that certain former journalists might start to shout?
I think a lot of drug testing excludes pregnant women, so tests which exclude some cohorts are fairly standard?
I'm sure other countries will be watching the nhs experience too.
Personally, I am really looking forward, hoping they are as good as trials suggest, ready for my jabs!

I always felt those vaccine trials done on children in state Children's Homes without permission of their parents have been swept under the carpet.

A real case of "Nothing to see here, move along."

I think Katherine Zappone was the biggest disappointment as Minister for Children. She's not in my constituency but I thought she would make a real effort for those with no voice.
I listened to an interview she gave to Miriam O Callaghan recently.
It made me very cross.
Don't get me started on her mileage allowance incident.

^^ Everything Lizzie said.

I don't have the patience to engage on these things any more Hmm

Emeraldshamrock · 07/12/2020 19:07

I will be in line for it too.
Imagine normal life again it is like a dream. Grin

veeeeh · 09/12/2020 20:52

I will take it also.

A bit ahem, about the efficacy of it to provide immunity, and how long the effects last, and if we need it every year. But gotta start somewhere.

Trials are ongoing I suspect.

Hello Irish Mumsnetters.
Can UK residendents visit CareHomes in the ROI after adhering to the 5 day isolation rule (having tested neg)?
Does it depend on the Care Home? There are no cases of Covid at my Dad's one.
I am just wondering if it's worth trying to visit my Dad over the Christmas holidays.

eggandonion · 10/12/2020 15:34

Are you in Northern Ireland or elsewhere in the UK? I assume they are used to NI visits, give them a ring?

My understanding is yes: once an international traveller tests neg after 5 days, they're the same as everyone else in Ireland in terms of movement. And the Xmas travel period (18 Dec to 6 Jan) allows people to cross county boundaries so travelling to wherever you like is allowed.

The care home might have its own rules, though (e.g., if they have any covid cases onsite, visits are usually stopped) so check first.

eggandonion · 10/12/2020 17:59

I hope you can have a safe visit, it's hard being apart so long.

Thank you for that Egg and MarDhea.

AurorayRuben · 12/12/2020 08:23

Having looked into it and spoken with siblings I won't be going this Christmas ....the 5 day quarantine is just not doable either side of Christmas. It's too long to be away from my family here.
I'm really hoping the quarantine days will be reduced by February half term.

eggandonion · 12/12/2020 08:34

I'd imagine if nursing homes can vaccinate residents and staff rules will change, but midterm seems early? Getting through January is the current big issue.
