Just heard the news about Jack Charlton and I'm sad to hear it. Italia 90 is such a wonderful memory for the whole country. To me, it was the start of the Celtic Tiger- the new found pride in our Irishness. We were always proud but maybe a little apologetic with it but after Italia 90, we found our place in the world.
(I know that's probably a very simplistic view but it's how I think of that time looking back.)

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.

I agree, OP. I was only a kid but I remember it all so clearly, like it was the first non-shit thing to happen to Ireland for the previous 50+ years.

On a bit of a nostalgia trip watching videos from the time. RIP Jack.

Agree OP, he was just so loved by the whole country and will never be forgotten. I have to admit I shed a tear watching all the old footage on the news last night.

So sad about this too. He was such a gentleman while being an absolute hero to the whole country.

I was in my early teens and I think Italia 90 might have well have been the happiest time of my life.

I hope Books of Condolence will open - even online - and I hope his family know how loved he was in Ireland.

I saw this on another board: "The best Englishman to lead an army" Grin.
