Sorted :)

Coronavirus ROI/NI part 3
OrangeGeckoWithBlackSpots · 26/08/2020 17:53

The problem is I don't actually believe the incidence is ten times higher than it was in June, JaneJeffer - I think back in June we had loads of cases but we weren't testing so we never found out how many we had.

I mean, take Tipperary for example. 31 cases there today (I think), but 22 recent cases workers in a meat plant, and another 16 family members of those workers. They were all identified by work testing, not by symptoms or doctor referrals.

I bet back in April/May/June if they'd regularly tested factories there would have been a hell of a lot more cases than we knew at the time.

I don't think we can "stay safe" from Covid any more - not unless we put the whole of society in lockdown again, and that's a disaster for everyone, particularly children. As long as (going back to the original plan) the curve stays flattened and there's room in our hospitals for the seriously ill, I think we have to try to just get on with it.

chartreuse · 26/08/2020 19:35

I had to venture out today to get some school stuff. I generally stay close to home due to a vulnerable family member. There was absolutely no social distancing in the shops, people coming right up beside me and squeezing past in narrow aisles. On the way back to the car I passed some restaurants with outdoor seating. The tables were adjacent to each other with no space in between, just as they were pre COVID. It was crazy, no way would I have eaten there.

Has everyone given up on the guidelines? It certainly looked that way. It made me really annoyed, I have to be careful but I can't trust others to do so which means I'll really need to keep on limiting my movements all winter.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 26/08/2020 20:37

Phil Hogan went before he was pushed. There will be an interview again on the news, but I don't think I'll look at it. I have enough of him.

Chartreuse, I haven't been out much recently, beyond grocery shopping. I'm planning to buy online if I can for other things. It's personal choice to avoid most shops.

My hairdressers was packed the time I went in almost two months ago. It's a small salon and there were six clients and four staff. Everyone was masked but it felt crowded. I'm due back again but may put it off for a while.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 26/08/2020 20:38

I mean to say I'm choosing to avoid shops, personally.

Taytocrisps · 26/08/2020 21:27

Is anyone else wondering what Sean O'Rourke and Seamus Woulfe were doing at an Oireachtas Golf Society dinner? Presumably they're not members of the Society. Were they invited guests? If so, who invited them? I'd say Maria Bailey is feeling very smug at the moment.

chartreuse · 26/08/2020 21:51

As obnoxious as PH is I think we've shot ourselves in the foot here. How to replace him with someone who will be able to grasp the detail of trade agreements in no time. That's if we can hold on to the trade portfolio. Maybe Simon Coveney, and Leo takes over foreign affairs.

We are in a right mess, as if COVID wasn't bad enough we have, very possibly, a no deal Brexit in 4 months.

chartreuse · 26/08/2020 21:53

@IsFuzzyBeagMise you're right, I'll go back to online shopping again, but I would so love a wander round the shops and lunch out!

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 26/08/2020 22:02

I know @chartreuse. We (DH and kids and I) went into the city three weeks or so ago, the first time since March. We had lunch and visited our favourite shops. It was good, but I feel it will do me for a while.

EarlofEggMcMuffin · 26/08/2020 22:18

@chartreuse

I agree chartreuse . I think he has behaved appallingly, has been a bit of a twit with his justifications and obfuscations.

But, Brexit, Covid, NI etc.
Better to have a seat at the table with someone who is speaking for us.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 26/08/2020 22:40

Yes, it's very close to the Brexit deadline. This doesn't help at all.

OrangeGeckoWithBlackSpots · 26/08/2020 23:56

Yes, chartreuse, I think we have shot ourselves in the foot, but I think unfortunately MM had no choice - if he hadn't pushed it would have looked like the government didn't care about the Kildare lockdown, and even fewer people would be taking any notice of any rules at all. I think if it had just been the Galway thing he'd have got away with it, but he seems to have been all over the place in the last couple of weeks.

The Brexit negotiations are going to be a complete disaster.

I agree about the overcrowding. I went to the bank for the first time today, and the queue was the same as normal, very little distance. Most people did have masks though (not that most of them were wearing them properly Hmm).

There's no joy in wandering around a shopping centre with a mask on, watching out for eejits; it's no fun so I'm generally keeping to the once-a-week supermarket run. I'm dreading the winter.

EarlofEggMcMuffin · 27/08/2020 10:40

I think he might have got away with it, if he had come out with hands up and a 'mea culpa'.

I saw the headline on the Irish Times as I was going to bed, and TBH, my heart sank.
He should have been an Irish voice in the Brexit negotiations.

But, the whistlestop tour around the country, the stay in the K-Club, the Garda stop.....it all looks like P Flynn levels of arrogance and entitlement.
Power corrupts, PH.

And if his team are monitoring social media (Mumsnet not really being a hotbed of Irish political opinion)...they should know that I am a middle aged moderate, middle class woman. I am as moderate in my views as you will find, and will always look for the other argument.

if you've lost me, you've completely lost your way.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 27/08/2020 11:11

That's it in a nutshell @EarlofEggMcMuffin.

OrangeGeckoWithBlackSpots · 27/08/2020 12:59

Yes, it was the lying. The original "sorry" statement said he went straight to Galway from Kilkenny - as soon as that was disproved, the whole thing came tumbling down.

honeyrider · 27/08/2020 13:08

I hope the media go after Seamus Woulfe next.

LadyEloise · 27/08/2020 18:10

It's the arrogance of those in power. Sad
The rules only apply to the little people.

Dominic Cummings was lucky to get away with his transgressions.
Checking his eyesight my a*se !

user1496146479 · 28/08/2020 22:43

How do people feel about how schools will be managed with regards to 'Close Contacts'?
If one child tests positive, the rest of the class will likely not be considered as close contacts, and parents might not told of any positive case?

halfpasteleven · 29/08/2020 03:49

@user1496146479 will the teacher be tested?
Have you a link for that?
I think the children should be tested / if the virus is in the air then the children in that pod/bubble should be tested as close contexts surely ?

user1496146479 · 29/08/2020 08:17

@halfpasteleven
I think the whole class should be too!
It was reported on this week

www.google.ie/amp/s/www.irishtimes.com/news/education/whole-class-will-not-be-automatically-tested-if-covid-19-case-confirmed-hse-1.4340427%3fmode=amp

Smurf123 · 29/08/2020 11:46

I'm ni but we are regarding the whole bubble as close contact. So all will have to isolate/ be tested

user1496146479 · 29/08/2020 12:03

@Smurf123 I wish we were too!!

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 29/08/2020 18:08

Hi, we got the document sent out to parents on Friday (primary school). I think that if there is a confirmed case in the class, the whole class should be considered as close contacts. The children aren't socially distancing. Who knows who would be likely to get it next?
