Coronavirus in Ireland/N Ireland

The first case of Coronavirus has been confirmed in Northern Ireland.
A passenger travelled from Italy to the North via Dublin.
I don't know how we will cope in the Republic if we have large numbers ill with the virus as our health service is already at breaking point.

I'm in NI, my sister's in Dublin. As soon as the schools closed in the south, she brought her kids up here to mum and dad's. Her house in Dublin is small but mum and dad have a bigger house and garden etc.

The open border makes a mockery of each side doing a different thing.

bellinisurge · 14/03/2020 09:50

NI has to fall into step with Ireland. Time for politicians to put their big pants on and make sure all-Ireland is doing the same thing.

bellinisurge · 14/03/2020 09:52

If this is any use to you WHO recipe for "home made" hand sanitizer.

Work up feeling rough today, I think it may be pleurisy, I have Lupus and get this when I'm going into a flare but I'm staying in just in case.
I agree I think the NI schools will close this week.

AnnieJ1985 · 14/03/2020 10:14

There is a meeting today in Armagh, represented by both NI and ROI- will be interesting to see how that pans out.

Overall I think Leo and the gang are doing a good job with this. Dr Tony Holohan must be knackered, but I am grateful for his measured, but serious, tone over the last few weeks.

I can't watch Boris or Donald... I end up stressed!

Pleurisy is a bugger - best wishes @Cocolapew . Keep in touch with health care people.

Cocolapew · 14/03/2020 10:18

Thanks bellinisurge, last time I had it I ended up with a clot on my lung so I'm bit more worried than I used to be.

Littlebearcat can you link to that newest advice please about keeping children in completely, i have searched and the latest info i can find is to allow children to play outside, football etc, in small groups (3 or 4), obviously i will follow any guidelines set down.

LadyEloise · 14/03/2020 13:50

DeadRinger
Thats some difference in attitude front pages.

chartreuse · 14/03/2020 16:13

I can't link to this but it's on Instagram and you tube (I think) conversation with a infectious disease specialist from Vincent's which spells out very clearly what to do and why

Has the panic buying slowed down/stopped? I was in aldi earlier and it was empty, shelves fully stocked.

chartreuse · 14/03/2020 16:36

I did my usual weekly shop in a large Tesco and it was surprisingly quiet, no queues and a very empty car park. Lots of loo rolls, but no potatoes, butter, eggs!

LadyEloise · 14/03/2020 16:37

I was in Tesco this morning, no queues as such and plenty of fruit, veg etc.
Still no hand sanitizer Sad

Smurf123 · 14/03/2020 17:14

Schools to close for 16 weeks???!!! Says Arlene Foster.. Just a matter of when

Cocolapew · 14/03/2020 17:17

Where on earth has she got 16 weeks from?!
Lurgan Model has decided to close this week.

hopeishere · 14/03/2020 17:49

I honestly don't think kids will be back this side of the summer.

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 14/03/2020 17:51

16 weeks!!!! Have any other politicians given an idea of time?

NoGravyForYou · 14/03/2020 18:01

Cases have doubled today and an extra death. So sad for the families involved.

LadyEloise · 14/03/2020 18:10

Was the desth in Ireland or NI NoGravyForYou ?

How many have died in Ireland ?

How many have fied in NI ?

Lipz · 14/03/2020 18:29

It's like the summer holidays here. I've never seen so many kids outside, I didn't even know we had so many. These are all very large groups. There is an ad on the tv stating it's not holiday time and to keep kids indoors, keep proper distance etc

People are more rude. Taking offence in shops when I try to do the distance thing. There's way more adults about too. Probably staying home to look after their kids. Home creches are practically heaving. I counted 25 going in next door yesterday, and that's what I saw. The screaming from the kids from 7am right up until 7pm was awful.

Where are people putting this food ? Had to cancel my Tesco shop as there was over half of out of stocks. Not one shop has bread, etc. They will have to stop buying in bulk as their homes will be bursting with food. Why didn't shops put in a limit to buying certain things, they do it when it snows.

I can't get sanitizer, I buy it as have disabled dd, we have to sanitize hands regularly when handling her and her meds etc. I always buy more when we reach the last bottle, but there's none to be gotten, so we're rationing this one bottle. How come the makers haven't made any more ? No one has had their stock replenished.

Tons and tons of rumours about the announcement on Monday by leo . Yes he's saying the country is not going into lockdown but they said they'd never shut the schools and they did. Why is the army on standby ? Why are they all going into barracks this weekend ? My bill (in the army) said they were told to have their backpacks ready for Monday, they're going into barracks to keep safe and virus free for when and if they are needed but how true is this ? Our army is tiny, they'll never manage here if there's a lock down, they were told they may have to go into hospitals, but in reality appointments have been cancelled, there's not going to be many people to control.

I'm sick of all this I hate how it is affecting our lives, dd waited 3 years for a particular appointment in crumlin and now that's been cancelled with no know future date. We're doing phone appointments with consultants from temple street.

It's just awful, I wish it would all go away, so many people affected, so many people who don't care. So much lost. People's lives up in arms. I can't even buy a cream cake to console my sadness because the feckers bought them in bulk too.

buckeejit · 14/03/2020 18:30

I've heard of 5 cases around my town (co. Antrim) & hospital probably won't be able to put those 65+ on respirators as they'll have to make difficult decision to save younger people. Same as reported from Italy.

NoGravyForYou · 14/03/2020 18:34

In ROI, it's 2 deaths so far.

buckeejit · 14/03/2020 18:35

@Lipz that is really tough for you. All you can do is the best for your family & try to get some downtime from it all. I can't get back to sleep when I wake up early now in the mornings, but we did play a board game earlier & it made things a bit normal & fun for a while

NoGravyForYou · 14/03/2020 18:38

@Lipz that sounds so tough. A family member of mine has had a much needed operation cancelled due to the outbreak, it's very hard not knowing when it will be rescheduled for.

My estate has been silent, no kids out playing at all. Everyone I've been on contact with has been taking these measures very carefully and social distancing is a thing that most people are doing.
