No need for one. We have the NHS.

AwesomeSauce4 · 24/01/2020 17:26

Paddy, are you serious?

keyboardwarrior1 · 24/01/2020 17:42

Samaritans cover some of the same issues.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 24/01/2020 18:26

Samaritans would be the closest, but nothing that covers the same work completely no

If you are Irish and in London/Birmingham you could try icap.org.uk maybe?

There is a thread on Mumsnet where a Mum is worried sick that her ds will commit suicide. I was hoping that there might be a Pieta House equivalent in the UK that could help her son
and perhaps help her too.

I’m being glib but also not.

I’m irish, and work in the UK as a psychiatrist in the NHS. It’s clear that mental health provision in ireland is woeful, so third party organisations like Pieta House fill the vacuum.

There are problems with NHS mental health care, certainly. But nowhere near the problems in ireland. So while there is third party involvement, it’s nowhere to the same level as Pieta House does. Pieta House fills a vacuum.

I have my personal suspicions about organisations with quasi-religious names getting involved in healthcare, particular given the politics of Pieta House’s founder. Nonetheless, it sounds like they do good work. It would just be better if they weren’t needed and if the health system actually provided adequate care to mental health patients.

So, I’m being glib but also not. The UK has good enough mental health care via the NHS, with some charities and private companies providing alternatives or adjuncts. But not really anything analogous to Pieta House.

Thanks PaddyFOdder.

Had.

Unfortunately, NHS mental health services have been badly hit by funding cuts, particularly CAMHS (child & adolescent), and in some areas they're barely functional.

I know someone in England who wants counselling for depression and suicidal ideation, and she has been repeatedly robbed off with online courses and drug prescriptions. She has been waiting 6 months so far for an appointment to talk to a human and is getting desperate.

I think the UK will soon be in need of a Pieta House Sad
