I'm so sad to hear this news. Marian was an absolute legend of Irish broadcasting. She held her own when RTE was dominated by a staunchly male culture and in later years has had few fucks to give.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

Wow, was really shocked to hear this. She really was a legend. RIP.

A great broadcaster. A trailblazer.
She will be so greatly missed on the airwaves and by the charity she founded in memory of her beloved daughter, Sinéad.
May she rest in peace.

I just loved listening to her. She drew you in to every conversation. Such a talented lady. I’ll miss her very, very much. Really sad news.

Radyward · 03/01/2020 09:10

I got the rage every Saturday due to her ridiculous salary for 4 hrs on a weekend. I do think she was an excellent broadcaster but I find it bordering on the ridiculous RTE stops in time when one of their own dies . I mean how is a late late tribute entertainment !!

beanaseireann · 03/01/2020 09:55

I remember wishing that it had been Marian that interviewed Leo Varadker recently.
She had a great way of getting an interviewee to open up and trip themselves up.

honeyrider · 04/01/2020 04:19

The hypocrisy of RTE management and presenters trying to outdo each other in praising her considering how the male farts were so against her taking over from Pat Kenny when he was quitting the Late Late.

Stillfunny · 04/01/2020 04:31

Radyward I totally agree with you. Did not think her contribution was worth her salary.
And I personally couldn't stand listening to her. Raspy , smokers voice.

But for her family , it is always sad when someone dies so relatively young.

Hollyhobbi · 04/01/2020 05:02

Why was she allowed to keep working at 69 yrs old? Very sad about her daughter dying at only 8 though. May she R.I.P.

AfterSchoolWorry · 04/01/2020 05:14

R.I.P.

😥

Radyward · 04/01/2020 13:18

My Dh thinks its to do with Varadkar keeping RTE on side iykwim and ( sideways justifying their existence and the licence fee) Contrubution to the state news. Highlighting issues blah blah blah.

OakElmAsh · 04/01/2020 13:19

Very shocked to hear about this, I really liked listening to her

mathanxiety · 08/01/2020 06:27

I get the impression that there are some here who did not experience Ireland of the 1980s, when she pretty much single-handedly carried the feminist agenda into the mainstream and challenged every entrenched institution in the country.

I wouldn't quibble about her salary. I would look on it as backpay from the time when she did the heavy lifting for the women and girls of Ireland at a time when it was neither popular among the powerful nor profitable.

There were people who hated her for what she stood for back then, for the windows she opened and for the fresh air she let in.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 09/01/2020 16:39

I agree with you Math.
