I'm so sad about this, she was only 62. She was a brilliant, empathetic writer for the Irish Times, she was one of the first to have a parenting column, I still remember an article about feeding fussy eaters and how she felt like a 'short order chef' catering to her children's likes and dislikes. I think of that article often as I'm cooking dinner.

Her children are only in their early 20's how awful for them and for her husband. She struck me as someone very self aware, what can have gone through her mind when she decided to do this? I'm so sad for her.

I just came on to post the same. I'm so sad to hear the news of Kate's death. I loved her writing, she seemed so kind and as you say, self aware. I really missed her contributions in the IT and on the radio in recent years.

It's a devastating time for her family and all those who knew and loved her. I hope they find solace in each other and their memories of her. Rest in peace, Kate.

I too admired Kate Holmquist.
I remember her writing about the lingerie shop opposite the Irish Times office - it was such a funny article.
I'm really sorry for her suffering and for her family who have to live without her.
May she rest in peace.
