Green card driving license

If you travel up to the North a couple of times a year will you be required to have a green card driving license thingy ?
I never heard about how them before.

I thought I could just drive over the border and I was still insured.

We travel via NI to get "hone" from Dublin, so this is a hot topic amongst friends and family at the mo.

Depending on how Brexit pans out, it looks like we will need a green card for insurance. Different family members rang their various insurance companies this week, and they all seem to be making plans to send them out, either automatically or on request. My sister's co said they will send them out anyway, but prioritising people who are likely to need one first - e.g border counties, people who specifically ask for one
