Heartbraking

TheCraicDealer · 28/08/2018 14:27

No they just closed the Maccies in Victoria Square as it wasn't doing the business. It's been away a while.

The cordon was between New Look and Tesco earlier (midday) and I can only imagine it's been extended again by now, so the Disney Store isn't going to happen either unfortunately!

FilledSoda · 28/08/2018 14:28

Heartbreaking i mean .
So many people.out of work , thankfully I don't think anyone is hurt

MiMr · 28/08/2018 14:37

No, thankfully no reported injuries. That whole area is completely engulfed in black smoke now

That's such a shame. I loved that building.

WhatHaveIFound · 28/08/2018 15:35

Sad to see the Belfast news today. I know a head office staff member and i know there'll be a sombre mood in their stores and offices today.

As for the store staff my thoughts are very much with them. Hopefully the company will try and open a temporary store somewhere else in the city whilst they rebuild the store.

MiMr · 28/08/2018 15:48

Someone suggested the old BHS store as it's just lying empty! Could be worth a shout ?

TheCraicDealer · 28/08/2018 15:49

The old BHS would have been ideal for a temp store but it was announced last week there's an Irish budget retailer (a different one) going in there.

It’s heartbreaking to see that beautiful old building on fire. I feel so so sorry for all the workers. It must be very difficult for them to watch. I was visiting glengormley and could see the smoke, over the top of the trees at cave hill.

MiMr · 28/08/2018 16:30

Now they are worried about the building collapsing.

The #wedeservebetter protest at City Hall has had to be cancelled.

crumbsinthecutlerydrawer · 28/08/2018 17:15

This is so awful, glad no one seems to have been hurt but it seems like the whole building might be gone. I feel awful for anyone who works there.

TheCraicDealer · 28/08/2018 18:03

The Beeb are saying the facade is at risk of imminent collapse. I'm gutted. One of our few Georgian buildings.

fivedogstofeed · 28/08/2018 20:29

Just met someone whose mother works there and was on the top floor today. She said the staff had to climb down scaffolding to get out and the fire alarms didn't all work. Shock
So lucky noone has been killed.

LivLemler · 28/08/2018 20:29

Awful. Both the jobs and the building itself. Such a loss. I could see the smoke from IKEA this afternoon.

LivLemler · 28/08/2018 20:55

Hmm. Anyone know how Tesco is? Another beautiful building.

PositivelyPERF · 28/08/2018 21:16

I think Tesco is ok, looking at the Facebook posts.

StoatOfManyColours · 28/08/2018 21:53

Anyone know if it’s still burning? Imagine if it had been Zara or Santander, whole sections of Royal Avenue might have gone up.

TheCraicDealer · 28/08/2018 22:19

Think it's smouldering now, they've been dampening down the last few hours.

Saw a photo of it earlier on twitter once the worst of the flames were out and thought "it doesn't look too bad (as in the facade)". And then I zoomed in Shock the clock numbers are still intact which is incredible, seeing the sky in the background through the face.

MiMr · 29/08/2018 15:16

Just devastating to look at!

My sister read that because it was such an old building it was full of asbestos... once the fire exposed it they had no option but to let it burn 🤷🏼‍♀ not sure.

There was a structural collapse this morning.

It will be so sad when all the Christmas stuff goes up, just a burnt out building standing there :/

Could you even imagine if it hit zara! The whole street would be gone.
