CervicalCheck controversy

Another absolutely disgraceful scandal in Ireland.
I have never forgotten or forgiven Michael Noonan for the way Brigid Mc Cole was dragged through the courts due to the Hep C scandal.
And now Vicky Phelan dragged through the courts because of the failure of CervicalCheck.

Have I misunderstood or was it actually decided Not to inform women that they had got a false negative result from their smear tests ?

If this is true I am just aghast. Shock
That women would be denied the knowledge that they have cancer, possibly terminal.

I despair of this country.

I agree, whoisafraid, the two issues are being conflated.
It is my understanding that it's not that a diagnosis is being kept from the women known to be affected, rather the fact that it should have been detected earlier.
It seems the CervicalCheck left it up to their treating physician and many of these dodged the issue. It seems some had the very paternalistic attitude that it wouldn't help the women to have this information, and would only upset them further.
Miriam Lord in the Irish Times had a very good article on the political response the other day.
Our state certainly has a very fucked up attitude to women's healthcare, particularly reproductive health.

Could somebody please clarify - are all Irish women who had a cervical check done with CervicalCheck in the past couple of years to have another one because they may have been given a false negative result ?

I'm not sure OP. If you contact your GP they may be able to advise you with more accuracy as they will have been told from CervicalCheck and the HSE I'd imagine.

Eloise I think it's only if you are worried yourself. There are no plans to recheck everyone.

My heart goes out to all the families affected.
Aren't Vicky Phelan and Emma Nic Mathuna amazing.
I wonder are there false negatives with BreastCheck too ?

It's devastating, I bawled listening to Emma on the radio, what a lovely and beautiful young woman.
I had a smear last week but don't trust the system so will go private and check where the lab is.

Those people involved who resigned - Tony O Brien and Dr Grainne Flanelly clinical director of CervicalCheck - do they get their pension / golden handshakes etc.
If so, what's the point?
Surely they would be more help to answer all the questions that need to be asked if they are in the job ?

There will be investigations but like everything else nothing will happen except that some wonderful women will die. Sad

I'm seriously concerned with BreastCheck.
I've heard of one false negative.

It's Ireland, of course they get everything.

The Chief Medical Office Tony Holohan should also be shown the door.

Oh Honey.
Sad
