Moving to Ireland in ten days- HELP!!

So myself and my DS are moving to Ireland. My partner is moving too but will be commuting back and forth to remain working in London for about six months.
Anyway I’ve just realised it’s in ten days! And aside from a bit of packing I’ve realised I’ve done NOTHING!! HELP!
What does anyone think I need to do? I know I’ll probably need a new SIM card or phone contract ... and to maybe set up a bank?! Is there anyone I should be telling?
I’m panicking!!
Anyone with any experience of this. Help please! DS is 15mo xxx

Hi - didn't want to read and not post.

What part of Ireland are you moving to? Have you got somewhere to move to? Renting/buying? How long will you be in Ireland? Long enough for your son to start school?

If you're on Vodafone, there is a roaming agreement between the UK and Ireland (and the rest of the EU) about phone call costs so I'd put that down your list of important things to do. It'll need to get done but not straight away.
Are you setting up a new bank or just a bank account? Grin

We're really lovely over here in Ireland and you're coming at a lovely time of year where there are loads of Christmas lights up.

I don't think you should be paying roaming charges so probably no urgency with the sim card. Cheap pay as you go deals with tesco mobile and an post.
What do you need to sort out? I presume you have somewhere to live. I'm in Ireland now but left UK a long time ago.

Welcome! You will need proof of address to open up Bank account are you renting or buying? You will need to reg with local surgery no biggie usually! Whereabouts you moving to? I'm in the mid west and happy to help

Do you have a house sorted? Once you are settled in there are lots of parent and baby groups about which are a great way to get to know other people in the area and feel part of a community. I assume you are not working but a sahp to your toddler...

Aw thank you so much for all the replies!! This shows how lovely the Irish are! We are actually moving in with my in laws to begin with as they have a huge house. Moving to a town called Loughrea in Galway. I’ve visited a lot as it’s DPs hometown and I love it so I am excited just have been so focused on the packing and goodbyes here that hadn’t even turned my attention to setting up over there. Was sure that much of it can be sorted on the other side but just wanted to get a good idea of important things!

@WhatchaMaCalllit thank you for that and for the link! I will definitely have a good look at that. I’m on 3 currently and they are relatively good with roaming and data in the EU but who knows what will happen after brexit!?WinkGrinI think I’ll give them a call and see what they suggest.

@SkeletalFishtail yes I’m a sahp as we knew we were moving so I resigned and London childcare would have taken all my wages! With the in laws so close though I am hoping to get back to some sort of work. Not fussed what it is! Toddler groups sound great. I’ve had a google and there is one in town I’ve found. If everyone is friendly as you’s lot I’ll have way more mum friends than I do here!

Galway is a beautiful place to set up home. Don't panic yet about Brexit. It's not going to have any direct impact until 2019 and you've all of 2018 to get through yet!

You may want to consider putting down some roots, so that will give you some idea of costs of mortgages etc (if you plan on staying near your inlaws). Some of the social scene is focussed around the local GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association - hurling and Gaelic Football) club and some is around what happens in the parish, depending on the age of the area that you're going to be moving to.

@WhatchaMaCalllit thank you for the links! The resource centre looks lovely. We have children centres here in London where we do lots of free groups that I would have really struggled with out so they are what I am going to really miss!
We have a plot of land to build our own house and planning permission going ahead at the mo but also have an offer accepted on a doer upper house so that we aren’t in a rush with the build. But there are issues with the deeds so not sure how that will go at the
Moment! At least we have lovely in laws to stay with! Smile

I don't think you need to worry then. The biggest thing at the moment will be getting your stuff from your London address to your relatives near Galway.
I'm a Dubliner but there are plenty of MNetters who are dotted all around Ireland so I get a feeling that you're going to be able to meet up and make plenty of friends.
Once you're here, you'll be able to get bank accounts set up but as someone else posted there are requirements now that you'll need to show proof of address etc. but that will come in time.

Ohhhhh, good luck. We are in the process of starting to move to Mayo. Just getting a job sorted and then we will be off. Excited and scared!

Sure you are only up the road! My best friend lives there with her children, beautiful lake there, playground & lots of activities and local involvement as you probably already know. Galway city has M&S for the necessaries. You'll be grand😁

Hi ya we are in Ennis, Co Clare. You have beautiful walks in Gort - WB Yeats' sponsor's Grand home
There is the Burren nature reserve - -beautiful and kilfenora Father Teds House! 😁 . People are very welcoming and will pump you for your life history (in a nice way). Happy to help in any way...

Live in Plumstead - I am from Mayo originally but have been in London for years. My children are getting a bit bigger and our rented flat is getting smaller so we are heading West for some fresh air and open spaces. I am hoping it will just fall into place but realistically think it will be a couple of years til we feel properly settled. Best of luck!

I wanted to get a bit settled before I updated you!
The actual move went fine, our stuff arrived and we are unpacked as much as possible settled in the in laws. 
We are just back from our first toddler group and it was lovely. We are booked in for swimming lessons on Monday and have another group we were invited to tomorrow! So feeling very positive. I was so home sick at the weekend so glad it’s looking up this week!
Thank you for the recommendations of nice places to go everyone. I got a back pack baby carrier for DS so can explore if the weather looks a bit better! 😑 bloody Irish rain!
It’s a big adjustment but I am beginning to think it will be okay! Like @Mammysin said it will prob take a few years to really feel settled.

Thank you! I got some maps for Xmas so I can look at what’s around. The household we are in is very ... non outdoors. As in they don’t really leave the house! Winkso I am on my own out to explore. Any nice walks that are easy to access and pretty to look at welcome! Grin
