I've yet in my 53 years to hear someone here in Ireland refer to Derry as Londonderry. It's Derry.

Yeah that’s actually the policy on correspondence in both the last places I’ve worked in- City of Derry, Co. Londonderry. I think it’s a good compromise. I think the only person I’ve heard call the city Londonderry in the last ten years is Gregory Campbell.

It's Derry, never, ever Londonderry. I haven't heard that name in years and even then it was only British newsreaders who used it. I don't think I've ever heard anyone in real life use it.

I have lived and worked in Derry. The only people using the L word are doing it to make a political point. I once had to send a (not local) locum home as she kept correcting patients and staff when they said “Derry”. “Actually you’ll find it’s LONDONderry”. When the first patient told her to fuck off I had to have her in for a little chat. Precious little madam cost herself a potential 6 month’s work. Who does that? I mean, really

Likewise. Although, it says Londonderry on my birth cert and if I want to say that's where I was born, I think it's a bit cheeky of other people to tell me I can't! Like you say, ZepellinBend, controversial!

Old thread I know, but I live in NI and know plenty who say Londonderry for both city and county. I'm from Dublin and it always sounds odd to my ear, but ho hum, tolerance and all that.

Have a feeling that I once heard Londonderry is actually technically more correct for the county than Derry, something about when it was officially named. The city is more arguable. I'm far too lazy to go Google it though.
