Ballina workhouse?

I recently got a copy of my grandfather's birth certificate (in order to apply for Irish citizenship) and found out that he was born in Ballina Workhouse. Does anyone know anything about the workhouse in Ballina, or anywhere I could find out more information about it? We are all sad and shocked - he never divulged this information during his life.

I would look on Facebook and google to see if any local historical groups. They can be quite active and hold a wealth of information.
Sorry to hear of his start in life. In those days I think there were many reasons for entry to the workhouse.
My DD has physiotherapy in what was the local workhouse. The building gives me the shivers every time I walk in.

I suspect that my great grandmother was pregnant and unmarried. In her occupation, it just said "formerly a servant" and my grandfather had a lot of shame about his upbringing.
