Funerals

I haven't lived in Ireland for a long time and can't remember much about funerals, except that they usually happen fairly quickly. Please can someone remind me if funerals can happen at the weekend or not? A close family member is near death and my husband will be flying home for the funeral (from Australia). They will delay the funeral for him to get there and I am just trying to work out logistics if the death happens near the weekend. Any help much appreciated, this is the only time we have found emigrating hard.

I haven't heard of a Sunday funeral in my parish but we are in suburban Dublin.

You could have a removal to the church on Sat evening, or Sunday evening for Monday mass. Although Sunday funerals are less common, they do take place so it's impossible to say really. Sorry your family is going through this.

This must be very difficult when you are so far away.

The short answer is yes, funerals do take place at weekends. In rural areas, it would be quite usual to have a funeral mass and burial on a Sunday. In cities, it would be more usual that the removal as pp has said would take place on a Saturday for example, with the mass etc on the following Monday.

Apologies OP for not sending any condolence to you. I was so intent on letting you know what happens usually in Dublin.
May they rest in peace.

Thanks all for the help. He is still hanging on, so my husband is still waiting for the dreaded phone call. The funeral will be in Cork, not sure if city or country though if it makes a difference. And does anyone know if the crematorium open at the weekends, as I have a vague memory that he might have wanted to be cremated?

Looks like it's mainly Monday to Friday.

The rallying before the end can be very tough on the family. Hope your dh is ok.

Sorry for your imminent loss.

Funerals do happen quickly - e.g if someone died on a Friday morning it's entirely possible the rosary could be said that night, a removal on the Saturday and burial after mass on Sunday. It can be held up for a few days though in the case of relatives needing to get home. But people do get buried on Sundays. I don't know about cremations.
