Covering feckin school books

Ok so this is never going to be as exciting as the OW thread but .. does anyone know if you can use a laminator to cover school books?

It seems the rest of the Western world stopped this carry on around 1975 and I hate it with a passion.

Failing that, any suggestions on a school I can move them to where they don't bother with such nonsense.

in my defence there are four kids, so a lot of books, and yes they should be doing it themselves

You can't use a laminator to cover school books as they only work on single flat pieces of paper/card. You can buy copy and book covers and some book shops offer a book covering service for a small fee. Believe it or not, books that are covered last much better than uncovered ones, which is why school ls why schools request that they are covered.

Wow, do schools still insist you do this? I can remember covering some of mine with wallpaper samples, others got covered with the Beano ...

looks like I will be buying covers then I wouldn't mind if there was a standard size but Dc go to three different schools and three different book suppliers.

In Tesco they sell Book Covering paper (some was glittery!).

Basically it has a sticky backing to it makes it easier than using wrapping paper and sellotape.

I used to love doing mine nostalgia. In England now and there's no textbooks, I find it very weird but they do seem to actually learn things.Also no multiple hundreds back to school bill

Why do people cover school books before they have checked they have bought the right books?
I was caught out badly one year- the bookshop gave me the wrong books for two of my dc. Book C instead of D kind of thing.
I covered the books and put dcs name on them, both inside and out and they were unreturnable.
I learned my lesson and don't put names on til they have been checked out in school.
I don't bother covering them at all.

I miss the routine of covering their school books now mine have all left school

I loved backing my exercise books with posters and wrapping paper.

You can actually buy clear exercise book sleeves that can be taken on and off though. Much easier than sticky back plastic.

Schoolbooks.ie covers them for you. Having said that my smallies are only in primary school where it seems that 90% of books are workbooks so disposed of at the end of the year. I refuse to cover those, such a waste of paper, wrecks my (eco conscious) head!!!
135euro for "books" and copies for senior infants, of which only 3 readers (about €15) that I can save for the next child. And that's before the "voluntary" contribution of €140.... free education my backside!!!

Easons will cover them for you too - you can call in with them. I don't know if you need to have bought them there, but they charge per book so I would assume not. Where did you buy them? I think it's about 70c per book to cover.

Oh, and one of the school copy manufacturers actually has copies that have a plastic cover rather than paper. They are brilliant - last much better than normal copies. Mr price stocks then I think!!

I didn't know books still had to be covered! Memories of my mother sitting down every August to cover roughly 8756 books for me and my siblings. She used to favour floral 1990s wallpaper

Ah the memories. I loved it! I was a demon for getting out the bubbles from the sticky back plastic. I only had beautifully flat books.

Although I am still raging that Ireland since 1870 had a wrinkle across Michael Collins face from Transition Year until the end of 6th Year.....don't know how I let that happen.

People probably still talk about you now as that girl who defaced poor old Collins' because she was a massive Dev fan.

I really didn't think backing books would get up to 17 posts. I don't quite own craicnet but it's not a bad result.

My kids' primary school do a book rental scheme - we pay an annual charge and they provide all the books & stationery.

Oldest's secondary also has book rental up to 3rd year and middle child will be using an iPad so no covering at all for me :)

I got the books and plastic before we came on holiday. You've just reminded me of the hell awaiting me at home. I thought dd's school had a book rental scheme when I signed her up

This time of year always reminds me of my mother hooshing me up the road to a neighbour who was the year ahead of me to buy her old books. Her dad was the local sergeant and her mother was odd so it was the worst half hour of the whole summer.

@squoosh I'd lived in the UK for a good few years and I moved back with a gloriously English accent so they just spent three years ripping the piss out of me for being "a green liveried henchman of the British connection." That quote made some allegedly nice girls from good homes laugh a LOT.

This brings me back... We used plain brown paper for ours, and I loved doing it so I got the job at the end of every summer.

In the US I bought stretchy fabric book covers for elementary school. The books were the school's and they wanted them back in decent condition. Everyone had to cover them. I once showed the DCs how to cover them in paper and they were gobsmacked.

Ordered from eason online this year and paid 75c per book also to get them covered. Happy sigh!

After checking the books bought for my 6 and 8 yo, literally none appear reusable grr (apart from the tables book) so I am covering NOTHING

They will get destroyed during the year without a cover. Most schools will have a book lending scheme for reusable books. If there are particular books used for homework (often a mental maths book for example) that will go in and out of the school bag everyday, I would get that covered at least.
