Shops charging ridiculous prices after stg to euro conversion

Based on my recent experience, Debenhams I'm looking at you Angry

Just received some cutlery I bought online in their sale. Full price sterling sticker says it cost £35 which means, based on today's exch rate, it should have cost €41.45. It didn't, they were charging €52.50 before the sale in Ireland.

How do shops get away with doing this?

(After my reduction in the sale I paid €39.37, which wasn't a brilliant bargain based on the above, but so be it.)

Does anyone else have similar experiences of this?

I think the big shops and chains are very unresponsive to internet exchange rate changes. That's because the prices are set centrally and in advance, so the things that are in the shops now in Ireland are based on last year's exchange rate, plus a bit extra in case Sterling had gone stronger, plus often a bit extra to reflect the extra shipping costs. I find smaller companies and online shops respond to current exchange rates much more quickly.

I quite often buy things from House of Fraser (who aren't too bad about exchange rates), if it's significantly cheaper in sterling then I would buy online and have it shipped via Belfast using Parcel Motel.

I use Parcel Wizard as I hate the fucking paddy tax UK retailers put on stuff.

So I order, pay the day's conversion rate from my bank account, get free UK delivery and pay Parcel Wizard €3.50

Parcel Wizard from An Post is great.
How big a parcel can you get sent that way?
My parcels were very small and light.

Debenhams
Next
Monsoon
The franchisees in House of Fraser
I always feel they mark up horrendously.

Yy Holly, and we are never given online access to the Next sales. Also I've lost count of the number of times I have ordered my DS a tshirt from Next, only for it to be part of a 2 for £x's offer (having probably paid almost the equivalent to the offer for the one tshirt, based on the inflated £ to € price).

I order direct from HoF online, pay the direct exchange rate when my card is charged and return to Dundrum when I'm out and about if needed. I now get my Mint Velvet and Oasis clothing this way unless there's a stonking great offer on their .ie websites (and even then I always check it against the HoF UK price).

Debenhams were able to get my dosh. They, and Next particularly piss me off.

I asked M&S (on thier facebook page) why their meal deal was so much more expensive than the UK. The answer was that they have overheads to cover in Ireland, and that the Irish price was worthwhile seeing it was so much less than each individual item added together

I them asked didn't they have overheads in the UK or something. Also why was each individual item priced so much higher in euro than their sterling price .

Got no answer

Monsoon are the worst. TOTAL rip off. I bought my DDs' flowergirl dresses for my DSis's wedding where I live in the UK. She lives and is getting married in Ireland. I nearly dropped when I saw the € price.

So glad we got them here!

This was extremely common pre-recession. I live in the North, from Dublin originally.
It levelled off for a few years, but just recently my mum and I have noticed it is creeping back in again. Now my mum checks the prices on line and if much cheaper I get it for her and bring it down. For a long time there wasn't really a difference, but there is now again.

Also in M&S in Dundrum and the mark up was very clear.
