Thanks Holly...I hadn't heard anything about her claiming inflated expenses. Very disappointing to say the least.

Why do we not have any accountability in this country?? It is endemic throughout all walks of life...you can completely fuck up (repeatedly) and there are no repercussions, no lasting consequences.

Who is the Chief Superintendent put in charge of investigating journalists links to Gardai?

One of the superintendents put in charge of investigating something, not sure what, is Noreen O Sullivan s husband. Very very stupid move.

Something of an explainer in today's Irish Times www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/explainer-what-is-the-mccabe-controversy-about-1.2976598

Thanks Rachel.
Now all the fuss is about Enda f*^•ing Kenny and whether he will resign.
Sgt Mc Cabe and his family's ordeal at the hands of state agencies goes on the back burner.
I'm sure relevant documents will have disappeared by now.
I consider whistleblowers heroes.

Completely agree holly. I hate that these things become a political football, and the important issues get shoved aside. Sad

I read that Maurice McCabe said that with hindsight / if he could turn back time, he wouldn't have done this. Eight years of stress, pressure...unreal. A sad sad indictment of those we should be able to trust implicitly.

KanyesVest · 18/02/2017 10:46

Piece by Fintan O'Toole explains why Enda, who shouldn't be the only one, has to go.

hollyisalovelyname · 18/02/2017 21:21

It's a pity it was hidden away in the Weekend review section.

I'm not at all surprised at this. Nepotism is rife upper ranks of the Gardai and the Justice department. It is almost impossible for the decent hard working, qualified and experienced Gardai to move up the ranks because the promotions inadvertently go to a family member of a high ranking officer. It happens so regularly you can just imagine what this does to the morale within the force m. In any other organisation there would be an outcry. I know Gardai who've applied for positions and who have been told they were the best candidate but the job is then given to the Superintendents lesser experienced nephew. Of course nephew then owes a favour if called upon and do the circle of rot begins.

This needs to stop. People should be promoted on merit and this might help stop the rot.

FarAwayHills · 18/02/2017 21:25

Apologies - wine casing sausage fingers

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 18/02/2017 21:31

They say this will be the scandal that forces Kenny out and will put us on the path for a general election. But it's out of the frying pan into the fryer really isn't it? They are as bad as each other. I can't name one politician who actually represents the Irish people and not their own interests.

Rachel0Greep · 19/02/2017 09:58

Not to mention the fact that it took months to form a government after the most recent election.

TulipsInAJug · 19/02/2017 13:56

I'm in the north and haven't heard about this at all! Shock

I have heard that the media in the south is pretty deferential to the government , is that true, or the case here at all?

honeyrider · 19/02/2017 23:11

The mainstream media are controlled by the government and Dennis O'Brien. You'd be very naive to belief the versions trotted out in particular by RTE on the controversial news.

TulipsInAJug · 20/02/2017 22:45

Meanwhile up here our political system has virtually collapsed due to corruption, scandal and unbelievable arrogance. Sad

hollyisalovelyname · 21/02/2017 09:33

Our political system wouldn't collapse over such things in the Republic.
They are regarded as par for the course.
Irish politicians don't resign over scandals.
Integrity. Hmm
We have public enquirers that cost many millions and achieve nothing.
Yet services to those with disabilities, to the elderly, to the sick are drastically in need of financial aid.
Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Apparently Sergeant Mc Cabe and his family have 9 questions ( I think it's 9) answered re the sexual abuse accusation.
Instead our government set up another expensive inquiry where nobody will be sanctioned and lawyers get rich.
