Ikea Carrickmines

Has anyone been? What's there? I need a couple of small things from the marketplace but I'm not sure I can cope with the Finglas expedition so hoping Carrickmines will be worth a punt.

It's near the Currys.

It doesn't have stock there - there's a few rooms set up and you can buy some small items there

There's a €15 charge for delivery - regardless of what you order.

Ah, ok, I thought they had a small marketplace too. I'd happily pay the delivery charge to avoid finglas if I could buy online and have it delivered to Carrickmines but that doesn't seem possible.

Thats to deliver to the store. So you have to return to carrickmines to collect on another day.

You order in Carrickmines (well the staff do it), and it gets delivered there for you to collect.

So it's a bit like ordering online. Except for the having to go in to the Carrickmines store to order!!!

My brother thinks that they have only opened it as a foot in the door to Dun Laoghaire Rathdown planning to get a big store, and they don't actually need it to be a money-making entity. Which sort of makes sense as when I went in to have a look around it seemed entirely pointless. The big Ikea shops have lots of signs telling you how the Ikea system works and how to buy stuff and have helpful-ish staff, the one in Carrickmines has no information, the staff practically stampede away from you if you go near them and that things that you can buy aren't the things that I want to buy. I haven't bothered going in again since the first visit despite driving past it every day on the school run.

Sounds about right, timtam, for the planning foot hold.

I get overwhelmed over there and in tk maxx so I was hoping to avoid the main store but I may have to just woman up to get my baskets.

A complete waste of space
Why not open a big store like the one in Ballymun?
If it were me I'd put one on the border of Galway Offaly to open it up to a wider market. Plus it would give great employment.

They want to open a big one holly, but Dun Laoghaire Rathdown have a maximum permitted square footage for shops and a standard sized Ikea is far too big. They've been trying over over a decade to get permission (I think mostly in Cherrywood) because southside is a very lucrative market, and they keep getting turned down by DLR. I don't know why they don't try getting permission for somewhere in North Wicklow near the M50 or Tallaght, maybe they have tried there as well.

Didn't an bord pleannala have to give special permission for the finglas site though? I think it's a national limit on the square footage. I agree holly, you'd imagine somewhere in the Midlands would be good for them.

Ah, a national limit would make more sense for why they're not trying in other places too.

They always build in areas with high population density, I don't think they'd get the footfall that they need anywhere outside of Dublin, except perhaps Cork.

Yes it's a national limit. I'm sure there were all sorts of clauses in the special permission for Ballymum including the road access.

One in the Midlands or near Galway does seem sensible.

That said, the Carrickmines store does seem to have people buying there whenever I've been near it.

I love it. I love the way it used an unusual and quite awkward site and turned it into a terrific space. I love how imposing it is. It's great to see a council with the courage to create a community resource that isn't a whimpering apology. I love how it links the metals and George's St making it accessible. Love the massive window to see the whole bay out to Howth. The mix of materials, I think it's great.

I love the Lexicon, I totally agree MrsDusty, I admire DLR for being brave and not building some Victorian pastiche. Have you been inside Holly? It's a beautiful space, it's open on Sundays now too.

I've been in it.
What a waste of a spectacular view.
There should be views across the bay from all floors.
It looks so out of place.
