stupid question this, flying over on Monday night to attend my Uncles funeral on Tuesday just outside Balbriggan, need advice in best hotel next to airport to stay in and how easy is it to get a taxi there or would I need to prebook? I usually drive when I go over there but didn't want to bother with car hire for such a host trip

The Maldron and Radisson are both right in the airport grounds and you can walk to them from your gate (though they also run shuttles). Both are fine, at the better end of business-y hotels.

If no joy there, there are a handful of other big hotels about 5 mins away by taxi at the airport roundabout - Hilton, Crowne Plaza, etc. I haven't stayed there but the big chains tend to be fairly standard.

Not sure if you mean a taxi to hotel or to Balbriggan. There should be no problem with the former, lots of taxis at the airport even at night. If the latter and you go for the Maldron or Radisson, you can just head back to the terminal in the morning and grab one there to Balbriggan. You might need to call a taxi from the roundabout hotels, though.
