Bed rail for cotbed

Has anyone attached a bedrail to a cotbed. We've taken the side of our DS's cotbed tonight and tried to attach the Lindam bed rail. Well have an hour's worth of huffing and puffing trying to put the thing together, it appears that even on the last notch it's too wide and there's a gap between the end of the mattress and the bedrail. We also worked out if she fell against it the whole mattress would lift up. Not very safe I'm sure you'd agree. It seems that it's designed for heavier, sturdier mattresses not the lightweight one we have on the cotbed. Not sure you can get heavier mattresses for cotbeds (it's just the Mothercare Pocket Sprung one she's been sleeping on since out of moses basket). Any suggestions ? Thanks

Have you thought about just putting a spare mattress or something soft (duvets / blankets) next to the bed? As long as the bed isn't too high, they won't hurt themselves if they fall out.

Our DS has been found several times fast asleep on his floor mattress, with his covers and cuddly toy still attached!

Yeah I've thought of that but there's a chest of drawers about 6 inches to the right of the head of her bed and I'm worried if she falls out she'll get wedged between the bed and the cabinet. Everyone says it won't be long before she's used to the bed so maybe I should just put some padding (pillows or something between the bed and cabinet). Just realised i said DS instead of DD - Doh :-(

My sister attached the extra headboard bit that came with our cotbed (a lower height one IYSWIM) to the side of the cotbed with duct tape. So 3 sides of the cotbed were the old full height sides, and one side had the lower bit acting as a bed guard. We repeated it for my DD - works brilliantly. But obviously only if your cotbed came with the extra bit!
