Cot or Cot Bed and which Mattress..?

Good Evening,
We are due to have our 1st in 3 months and have started looking for the above.
We have kind of settled on buying a cot and moving to a bed later. Is this the right thinking? Whats the best cot?
We are going to buy a new mattress, which one is the question?
Can anyone with some experience help?

Unlike most people we went for a cot, so that it would fit in our bedroom for first 6 months and we wouldn't need a crib/moses basket. The downsides of this were that the cot seemed very big when the baby was first born and I think the baby would have preferred something smaller and when we did the transfer to a big bed I think it was more of a big deal as was more of a change. However DD went to a bed very easily and DS took more persuading. The cot seemed very small by 18 months plus which may mean you feel you need to move to a bed eaerlier than you might choose to.

Overall, I still prefer the compactness of a cot though.
