Playpens vs travel cots?

I've seen some folks using travel cots (the full size variety) as playpens in the living room and am just wondering about the value of this? Surely, to encourage stable standing etc it'd be better to have a stable floor / base (ie playpen), rather than the more unstable floor of many playpens? That's just my gut feel though - would be interested in informed opinions! Thanks!

I never thought about that. My travel cot was used as a playpen as well, only when I needed to be sure they were safe and not getting up to mischief, if cooking dinner, answering the door or if I needed to sit down for a rest and a cup of tea

My children were only in them for short bursts and the rest of the time I let them roam free, once they learnt to crawl though.

If you're lucky enough to have the space the hard floored ones look great. I had to collapse our play pen after use as I live in a 2 bed flat and it took up a lot of room when up.

Certainly never affected them learning to stand and walk as far as I am aware...
