Matress Advice

I have a really odd sized crib that i can't find a matress to fit (89x55cm). Will I be ok buying a foam matress with a cover and cutting it down to size than folding the cover under at one side so it fits snugly.

It came with the worlds most useless matress that leaves a 5cm gap so I just can't use it.

I'm thinking it should be safe - and I really can't afford a custom made one.

Have a look here first. I don't know what they are like service wise, but it may be the answer you need?

Just to let you know - I have a safe fab matress for baby - thank you

Am about to buy a natural bamboo mattress from the same place. Am wondering what's the best mattress cover to get - any advice?

Lionstar · 10/03/2010 12:42

Just be aware that bamboo 'natural fabric' claims can be a bit misleading. Bamboo is processed using chemicals into cellulose fibre, therefore is simply a form of rayon. Unlike cotton and linen which are spun fibres. It is likely that the processing destroys any of the supposedly anti-bacterial properties - but possibly some forms of manufacturing are less intensive than others. Ask the supplier to validate their eco claims about the fabric, sadly a lot of bamboo products are just another form of 'green-wash'

What natural mattress would you recommend Lionstar? I need one made to measure for an inherited cot...

Lionstar · 12/03/2010 22:20

Actually I did get one from babymatressesonline. I got a coir and wool organic one. Not that cheap though, but very comfy. I wanted all natural materials with no plastics (like foam). Also looked at ones with natural latex in. Not necessarily trying to dissuade you from getting a bamboo one, just trying to make sure you had a better picture of what bamboo fabrics entail.

Thanks. Was the natural latex for the waterproof cover?

The ones with latex are a bit like a memory foam see here. They often come with coir and wool outerlayer for good heat properties and airflow. Here's a picture of a kids mattress with it.
