We need a bed for DS1 (7) that;

  • has truly functional drawers underneath to store everyday clothes(ie drawers are a decent size and open and close easily)
  • has all the space under it filled (DS1 has allergies so space underneath would just be a dust trap
  • we could still easily sit on for bedtime stories without a ladder
  • preferably that we could see in a shop rather than being a purely online brand

all recommendations gratefully received!

Sorry I can't recommend an actual brand, but I support your idea of not having it too high. Not needing a ladder would be good for other reasons in addition to reading ie when changing the bed, when child is vomiting and you have to clear up (!) and generally when child unwell its easier if not high up.

I'm saying this as we bought a high bed and although it was fun, these issues were all a pain at various times!

I have also found those boxed in type of beds a real pain when changing sheets- so you are right to choose carefully.

that's very kind of you both to take the time to reply. Sandripples, yes, it's becoming increasingly clear to me that high beds come with issues.....I think if I was going to go high I'd go for bunk (he shares a good-sized room with Ds2) because they at least you can guarantee that you'll get the benefit of the extra floor space on the other side of the room.

we have just got these for our twins, the bits underneath come out so quite versatile, well made and M&S assemble them for you too (they even arrived in the snow!)
