Bright coloured cot - or possible to stain a plain one?

I need a basic no-special-features cot for DS, who is 10 months, (not urgently, just in the near future) and I love the bright Brio cots, but they are really expensive for their lack of features (mattress heights, drop side etc) and I was thinking it ought to be possible to just buy a really basic cot and paint or stain it in a bright colour. I am assuming we'd need to either buy an unfinished one or sand it down - also, we would have to find non-toxic paint or woodstain and/or varnish. And can you buy the plastic teething rails anywhere?

Plastic teething rails are available - just google, and you'll find plenty (some seem to be cot-specific) - Amazon have them.

You'd definitely need to be careful if you were staining it.

Ikea do some brightly coloured cots here. But they are still quite expensive.

My cousin painted their son's cot with normal gloss paint (but that was 14 years ago!). I would probably paint rather than stain. I wonder if eco paints might be safer than bog standard ones?

Ikea do a bright red and a bright blue cot - and a teething rail for only £2.99?

I painted ds1's cot a nice gloss, unfortunately due to the underneath surface being a bit shiny, it scratched very easily. Also painting spindles took forever!

I wouldn't bother. It is a BIG hassle. Try to find a nice plain maybe darkish wooden one that goes with everything, trust me you will be grateful to me for this advice

I also painted another one before that, didn't work too well either - so many fiddly little places you miss...and ended up just using an antique one with Gawd knows what in the paint, but luckily he didn't chew it, andis mainly in my bed anyway...

The black Brio cot has adjustable mattress heights (2) and a drop-down side if that helps- but yes, they are not cheap.

They are in the sale here but not much money off.

Don't know if you'll see this as it is nearly a omnth since last post, but Ikea sniglar cot is very cheap, plain wood to do with what you wish. We had it and it is quite nice They also sell the rails too etc.

There is a selection of cots and cotbeds here if this is any use.

Many years ago I painted a with special paint and I agree with above poster, I just wouldn't bother. It took ages and as you soon find out it scratches.
