Advice on a bed/cot that joins onto mine please

Hi all!
my 7 month old has fully outgrown their next to me crib, baby is breastfed so I was hoping for something that joins into my bed with nothing in between so that I can feed baby during the night without getting them out of bed (sometimes having to put them back down wakes them)
baby is currently rolling into the side which isn’t safe for breathing. I was also hoping that the bed could be turned into a traditional cot/bed with 4 sides for when the time comes for them to sleep more independently.
(sorry I’m not clued up on the abbreviations just yet) and thank you in advance for any advice :)

Thanks for your response!
this has crossed my mind but my bed is only a standard double that I share with my partner so unfortunately not very much room and I’m hoping for baby to start sleeping a bit more independently soon :)

Just Google ‘side car cot’ ideas I had the cheapest big cot from Argos and attached to my bed with straps around the feet. You may need to use raiser blocks from amazon or something to bring it to match the height and then I stuffed a tightly wrapped towel down the far side of the cot mattress to make it all flush and no gaps etc. bed guards aren’t really recommended until 18+ months due to entrapment risk I think! Alternative would be to set up a floor bed situation which I then did at around 12 months just with a mattress on the floor with slats underneath ? Lots of options but good for you wanting to keep your baby nice and close and secure it’s a really loving secure attachment you’re making x my baby is 3 now and sleeps in her own room just fine and did this all by herself never a tear shed x

Thank you! It’s so good to know I’m not making a rod for my own back by keeping baby so close atm, I was worried it would cause problems down the line with them being able to sleep without me!

I was hoping for some recommendations for cots or beds that work without one side that could be added later on, I have tried looking on google, but so far I’m a little lost x

I think one like this would work just any they advertise as being a cot bed convertible and then just attach it to your bed with like cable ties or strong ribbon etc

Sorry, only just seen this. Recommending the Chicco next to me forever for sidecar 6mths+ that will last as a freestanding cot (then floor bed). Not the most stylish but it works. And the drop side is great if you have a feed to sleep giant to manoeuvre into the bed once it’s stand alone.
It’s mentioned quite often if you search.

Thank you so much! I’ve ordered one from ikea that I’m due to put up, if that doesn’t work I’ll definitely use your advice!

Hi! I’ll have a look for the link now but it was just a standard cot and mattress from ikea and I left one side off, I’m lucky that the cot matches up to my bed perfectly but you can buy feet on amazon for raising furniture!
I roll a large towel up and stuff it between the cot and mattress on the outer side of the cot to make sure the mattress is nice and flush against mine.
it’s worked well! If anything too well because now my baby knows they can just roll into bed with me at any time 🤣 but it has definitely helped with me getting a little more sleep, being able to feed him while we’re both still laying down in separate beds Is perfect!

So the cot was https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/gulliver-cot-white-10248519/

and the mattress https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/krummelur-foam-mattress-for-cot-20404477/

I hope this helps! The fitted sheets should come up as a suggestion after adding these to your basket.
wishing you and your little one a good nights rest 🥰

You could also try a chicco next2me forever. Lasts to 22kg and is just a bigger version of a baby next2me. We've had one for 18months now and although we are mostly cosleeping now, its very handy. They are quite pricey though so look out for sales - we got our with 50% off and it made it much more reasonably priced.

newmama2023 · 25/01/2026 20:28

My husband did the side car cot trick with ours. Works perfectly. My daughter is nearly 3 and still spends half the night in there next to me. Means i still get space to sleep, and she still has the comfort of me being next to her

newmama2023 · 25/01/2026 20:33

Would also like to add, it was her normal cot that turned into toddler bed. Just took one side off. And strapped it to my side of the bed. Our bed it quite high. So husbad made extra feet for the cot, so the mattress is level with ours

Lilacmama24 · 26/01/2026 00:29

Thank you so much @Alipow that's sooo helpful! I want it exactly for that reason (a big extension to my bed so we can both sleep well xx

Lilacmama24 · 26/01/2026 00:31

@newmama2023 This is literally what I am looking for. Is it stable with the base that your husband added? Did he buy it off amazon or make it himself? I want it flush with my bed so that my LO has her own space but I am also close by as she likes to be close to me when she sleeps, but any movement from me and she wakes up!

Lilacmama24 · 26/01/2026 00:33

@Cosleepingadvice thank you for this. I will keep an eye out for sales. I think I just missed it. X
