Transition to toddler bed

Hi all, looking for some advice on transitioning my 2 and a bit year old to a toddler bed.

DS turned 2 at the end of March and at the moment still sleeps in his cot with all 4 sides. He’s never been great at going to sleep and at the moment he falls asleep in our bed and then we transfer him in (I know this is a terrible habit we’ve gotten into but that’s a whole other thread!). It means he’s never really figured out he can climb out as he doesn’t spend bedtime lying in his cot and falling asleep independently.

We’re moving house in a few weeks and I’m also expecting a baby in October. I’m wondering if rather than taking a side off his cot, which he had planned to do soon, if we would be better off buying him a new “big boy bed” for his new room and using the house move as an opportunity for the transition. Then we would keep his current cot for the new arrival in October. I thought it might help in terms of him not feeling that the new baby is taking “his” cot too.

The other option is to just take the side off his current cot and do it more gradually. Maybe he would find the move to a new house easier if he had his familiar cot? In that case we would probably by buying him a toddler bed in a few months when the new arrival is ready to move out of the bedside crib and take the cot DS is currently using.

Any advice or suggestions on the best way to go about this? Thanks all!

Always a tricky one but i think your setting him up for failure slightly.

  1. He's not used to falling asleep independantly.
  2. A house move might potentially upheave him a little, a new place etc - he may have a lot of emotions.
  3. On top of that, your removing the cot that he knows and replacing it with this big strange piece of furniture.

I'd say start by working on independant sleep, then take one side off his cot as he adjusts to life in his new house/room. Then move to toddler bed.

Too much change at once is a receipe for disaster.
