Someone is kindly offering us their second hand Babybay cot for our upcoming newborn. I think it's a beautiful cot, and had read some positive things about it, so gratefully accepted. But when I went online to buy a new mattress I saw a couple of warnings from safe sleep sites in Australia and the US stating that they don't meet safety standards there and not to use them (in fact it's illegal to import a Babybay from Europe to the States - although there is a US model that does meet their own safety standards). Apparently the concern is that there's a big gap between the baby's mattress and the mattress of the main bed, which is a risk for both suffocation and limb entrapment.
Has anyone used one of these and have any opinions / experience with this gap? The UK and German Babybay sites both say that they meet European safety standards but I'm worried now. We haven't yet received the cot so I haven't seen for myself how big the gap is. Has anyone had trouble with there being a gap and come up with a fix for it?
