Cots and beds

This topic is for discussing cots and beds. We've spent weeks researching and testing newborn beds in real homes with real families.

Can I just get a cot rather than a bassinet?

I'm a first time mum due in September so even though I won't be buying anything for a while am trying to get a rough plan of what I'll need ready.

We're in the process of buying a new house and the master is an L-shaped room so with where our bed will go there's no space for a next to me crib which was what I originally wanted.
So, considering I won't be able to use a bassinet how I wanted to- is it worth even having one or should I just go straight for a cot we can move to the nursery when the baby is old enough? Or will I still appreciate a bassinet while they're tiny?

Hi @kittykatmama you can put the little one into the cot from birth. One tip is to swaddle him/her and that will keep them cosy. Remember not to use any pillows or cushions, soft toys for anything to make the space smaller. A swaddle is fine.

Both of mine went in the big cot from being newborn. With DC1 we had a moses basket very briefly but she hated it, DC2 we didn’t bother trying anything else. Both good sleepers.

Both mine went straight into a cot (at the end of our bed). We used baby sleeping bags to keep them cozy.
