How do you know when it's time to move from a cot to a bed?

When did you move your kid from a cot to a bed? What dis you do when going away, put them in a single bed or a travel cot?

We knew it was time to move DD from her cot, when she climbed out and fell on the floor!! She was just under 2, we didn't bother with a toddler bed and put her straight into a very low single bed with a bed guard xx

When they climb out.

DS was 3.4 and DD was 2.6 when they moved from cotbed to bed.

When they climb out, fall out, are too tall or too heavy for you to lift them out. There's no hurry.

Just moved our third DC into a single bed a few weeks ago. He kept climbing out his cot so it was definitely time. Didn't bother with a guard, tucked the covers right under the mattress, and used the cot mattress as a landing mat He's only fallen out once and apart from a wee bit of a fright was fine.

I am watching this thread! My son is 2 and climbs out, but I'm scared to move him into a bed. Do they lose a lot of sleep? I'm 5 months pregnant and I don't think I could function without less sleep than I already get!

Tbh it was a novelty at first and DS was up and down like a yo-yo for the first hour of bedtime. Lasted less than a week though? Toilet training as well, I know, who's bright idea was that so kept his potty by his bed and he'd use it himself if need be. Does mean if they're particularly early risers they'll be climbing all over you at stupid o'clock

We put our DD into a bed a few weeks after DD2 was born as we knew we would need the cot at 6 months but didn't want DD1 to feel like she had been kicked out of her bed. Put her straight into a low day bed type bed and she loves it. Never gets out, even in the morning. She just lies there and shouts for me to get her, like she did in her cot!

When the start doing the great escape. Piling up bedclothes to help climb over. When dd2 went into a cot bed she used to roll out and I'd find her in the morning sound asleep on the carpet!

I'm a big believer in not rocking the boat! If they sleep well and don't try to climb out then leave them! One of mine was in until her 4th birthday. I only insisted she change to a bed as she was starting school a month later and I didn't want her to be teased.

I've got 3 children and no idea why, but none of mine have ever attempted to climb out or in

We moved our ds into a toddler bed when he was 17 months. He wasn't happy in his cot at all. He wasn't climbing out but he would scream and cry a lot. Since we put him in a bed he slept much better and was so much happier

DS1 got kicked out of the cot into a toddler bed at about 14 months. DS2 was getting too big for the crib and needed to move. DS1 was fine, we just put a baby gate on his bedroom door and he settled into it really quickly. DS2 went into toddler bed at a similar age when DS1 upgraded to a mid sleeper when we moved house.
