Acrylic Cot

Hi, my partner has made an acrylic cot for when our little boy arrives (I'm 22 weeks so a while yet)

I was wondering people's opinions on it?

The acrylic has hand marks on it in the pic - apologies lol

I'd be worried about it getting hot but it looks lovely.

My partner looked into it and apparently acrylic keeps it the ideal temperature, it doesn't allow it to get too hot but obviously this is from the internet so could be rubbish..

Hmm yes ventilation would be my concern. You are not supposed to use cot bumpers because they cut out the airflow at the mattress level so how would this work with the acrylic? Does it have ventilation holes?

I thought cot bumpers were just dangerous because of the risk of suffocation? Obviously we wont be using a cot bumper anyway lol x

I'm sorry your OH is very resourceful but you can't seriously put a baby in that. There are very strict regulations regarding cots and the gap between the edges and the mattress, airflow (that's why they don't have solid sides) and the materials they are made from. I'd be very wary of putting my child in that, you'd never forgive yourself if it turned out not to be safe. Personally if I couldn't afford a cot I'd rather but a sturdy travel cot for £50.

Yes cot bumpers just dangerous because of suffocation risk.
It looks fab though.

He has made the cot to the standards, for everything but the only thing is doesn't specify is anything to do with air flow of the cots.

It isn't about not affording a cot, I just wanted something unique and my partner makes furniture for a living so it came hand in hand really, but we need to know it's safe that's why we're asking opinions until we can have a professional look at it x

Except they use acrylic cots in postnatal wards...

Just had another thought - cot bumbers can be dangerous if the baby rolls against them and can't breathe - I think it would be similar if they rolled against the side?

It's presumably not an issue in hospitals as babies can't roll?

The ones in hospital are much shallower allowing plenty of air to circulate the homemade one is more like a goldfish bowl, I think there's a good reason why in all the years that cots have been made no one sells plastic acrylic ones. Plus you'll be forever trying to clean the dribble marks off the sides.

How about drilling some holes in the acrylic?
Do you think you will be able to lift a sleeping child in and out of the cot easily? It looks quite deep.

Yes we're thinking about putting holes or bars in the sides, it isn't as tall as it looks (I'm 5ft 2 and can easily reach down)

Acrylic ones are sold, Kim Kardashian has one for North West (I've recently found out haha) also Beyonce does too.. If you google acrylic cots they do come up but it is mainly in America I think by the looks of it

Agreed the one in the link looks lovely, op I'm sorry to say but yours just looks a bit grim by comparison. You can also see that in the OP's cot there is a large gap between the mattress and the sides whereas the one in link the mattress goes right to the end of the cot. Babies have died because their heads can become trapped in the gaps - you can't take chances.

If you do put holes in it make sure a baby/toddler can't get their finger stuck otherwise it will be a trip to A&E.

There isn't a gap between the mattress and the actual frame, I'm not sure why it looks like it, might be the angle. It's measured around the size of the mattress and was cut to size

I think it is very rude if someone to say yours looks grim when your dh has designed it beautifully. Bit of mint coloured paint and you wouldn't know the difference.

Looks lovely, with regards to air flow, there is that huge air flow hole at the top! Definitely more circulating air than say in a tent. Babies suffocate with cot bumpers as they mold to the babies face, that won't happen with this

They have one very similar in DSs nursery. I think it's lovely

I think it's lovely and a coat of paint will make a huge difference.

I would be very worried about restricted airflow if baby rolls and face is up against the acrylic. I'm also concerned about stability once they get older and can 'rock the cot'. I would buy a cot / even second hand and use the mattress you have. It's just not worth the risk or your piece of mind
