Cots and beds

This topic is for discussing cots and beds. We've spent weeks researching and testing newborn beds in real homes with real families.

crib from birth

This may sound terribly stupid BUT can a newborn go in to a crib from birth? or is it safer that they are in a moses basket? I have bought a crib (for when they are old), a crib for upstairs and a moses basket for downstairs. Should they be in a moses basket at night or is it okay to use the crib?

Thank you in advance

You can put them straight in a cotbed if you want to. Makes absolutely no difference safety wise.

Go with whatever will get you best value for money (bearing in mind the guidance is for baby to be in the same room as mum until 6 months).

Okay then, thank you! It will just make things easier to have something separate upstairs and downstairs, I used to have to carry my daughter's moses basket back and forth and it was a nightmare! So will keep the crib upstairs and the moses down.

The only thing is that your baby might not like being in such a big space. We bought a bedside cosleeper which is bigger than a Moses and smaller than a normal crib but even so he wouldn't settle in it- we had to borrow a Moses basket. I think he liked the comfort of being able to touch the sides.

But my crib seems so small? although I am used to my 2.5 year old by now and have probably forgotten how small a newborn is! If he isn't settling, I'll just buy another moses and replace the crib with it. It isn't the cost that I'm worried about, I just want everything organised and in place before he arrives that's all. (Going through the 'panicky' phase)

Do you mean a crib or a cot/cotbed? Cribs are small and suitable from birth to about 6 months-ish. Perfect for a newborn! Moses basket are slightly smaller than a crib and might only last until 4 months-ish. Crib upstairs (then cot when they grow out it) and moses basket down stairs sounds ideal!

I just realised that I made a mistake in my first post! woops! I have a COT in baby's room (for when they go in to there), a CRIB in my bedroom and a MOSES BASKET downstairs - sorry!! Thank you Hoppity I shall not rush out and buy another moses basket yet then lol xxx

Your set up sounds perfect! I know what your mean about the last minute panic though! Good luck for when your baby is here Flowers
