Cotbed Mattresses

Hi All, I have a cotbed but i am yet to buy a mattress, it all seems a bit confusing - what is best, do i need to spend loads of money on one? They seem to range from £90 roughly upwards, my cotbed is from Mamas and Papas so was looking to buy it from there but not sure whether it would be best to buy elsewhere?
What is everyones thoughts on this? Does it need to be the best support etc?

I suppose it depends whether you want to fork out for a sprung mattress or stick with foam.

I used a breathable foam mattress for all 3 dc (new one for each kid btw) and just bought the thickest one which I think was about 12/13cm thick. Cost around £30 from eBay shop. Once they moved to a proper single bed then they got a sprung mattress (£££)

He hasnt been born yet, am due in March but wanted to get mattress sorted soonish really. I read the mattress guide on their website which says pocket sprung is best support so i assume (rather naively) that this is what i should be buying! £30 sounds like a much better price to be spending at this stage.

If the plan is to use the cot bed for the same dc until they are 3+ then go for a sprung mattress. If you are going to only use it for the baby stage then go for foam.

Cotbeds are standard size normally (140x70cm) so shop around for a mattress - I doubt m&p is best value.

Yes was planning on using same cotbed for a few years so its an idea to get the sprung now?

We got a Mamas and Papas sprung mattress for our cotbed when I was pregnant with DD1. We went for the mid priced version. 7 years, 2 children in it for 3 years each (one still using it) and it's still going strong so I see it as a sound investment.

Buy a mattress protector though.

just to say double check the mattress size - bought my cotbed and mattress from mothercare but there was a three inch gap between them - I was not impressed!

No i wouldnt be either, thats why i thought i should buy from the same place but even then it can be wrong!

Good point elvisola, always use a mattress protector otherwise a foam mattress is just like a big sponge that you cant get clean. Even if the mattress has a waterproof surface its still better to have a seperate removable cover that you can easily wash, dry and put back. Ours is this one Cot Bed Mattress Protector
