Toddler or single bed?

We have just took one of the sides off ds's cot as he was climbing out. However he is near the weight limit on his cot.
Wondering whether to get a toddler bed or if this is just a waste of money and to go straight to a single? Ds has just turned 2.

My DS1 has just turned 2 and is in a single with a bed guard. We had this exact debate a few months ago and came down on the side of toddler beds being a bit of a waste of money. He's so much happier in his big bed than he was in his cot!

They just seem so big! I get very confused when buying baby stuff. Also want something he can get in and out of on his own but not fall out if you know what I mean.

Yeah, we thought that too. DS is fine climbing in and out of his - he shuffles down past the bed guard and climbs out backwards on his tummy IFSWIM.

The bed guard itself is brilliant, it's one of those that just slide under the mattress and strap into place. You can fold the side down to make the bed as well so you don't have to keep taking the bloody thing off

He's been in it since July when he was 20m (we had to do it early as DS2 was arriving and we needed the cot!) and has never fallen out yet touch wood

We went straight to singles until DS3 as he has a tiny room and friends passed on their toddler bed. Wouldn't pa for one tbh, at 4 he's already already looking cramped.

We went for a single. When we took the side off DD' s cot she fell out a couple of times because it wasn't wide enough. The toddler beds seemed to be the same width, but longer.

She had to use a step to get on in the beginning, so I thought I'd made the wrong decision, but she's fine with it now. It's much wider and she hasn't fallen out of it.

We got a mattress which we left on the floor till she stopped rolling out. Then put it on a single bed. Toddler beds are a waste of money IMO and special sheets etc. Plus this way an adult can sleep in it too if the LO comes in with you ever....

My vote is for straight to a single as they grow pretty fast and you will be swapping it for a single sooner than you expected plus the limited amount of bedding made to fit a toddler bed

We went straight for single as dd1 was such a bad sleeper it meant we could get in with her if needed, snuggle in her bed for story time and if she was ill she could come in our bed and one of us could go in her bed. We used her cot mattress on the floor and only once found her fallen out of bed asleep on the mattress on the floor!

dtds are in cot beds with the sides off and they always fall out - I think it's because they are so narrow. We are limited due to space and putting them in single beds means swapping bedrooms with dd1 and decorating a nursery to suit a 6 yo so we're putting it off until the summer, otherwise we would have gone straight for singles.
