Second hand mattress for toddler bed?

Hi - am looking to buy a second hand toddler bed. Does anyone know what the advice is on using 2nd hand mattresses with toddlers? I know you're not supposed to with babies, but does this change when they're older?

Even if the mattress looks clean, it may have bacteria inside it. More of a problem for babies and the risk of SIDS.

Not sure about toddlers though. Really, it's how comfortable you feel about it. You could always get a waterproof mattress protector and put that on under the sheets, to act as another barrier.

Personally, I would get a new mattress, but that's me.
