Safety issue with John Lewis Anna Glider Crib, too!

Hi,

just came to post this and saw the thread about the Cosatto cot.

But anyway - as much as it might look like I'm being a copycat I will go ahead with this post, as it might prevent someone's child being hurt.

I got a second hand Anna glider crib like this last summer when I was still pregnant.

Took it home, assembled the top bit to the stand. Ds2 asked if he could have a wee go in it, I said Ok, he put one foot in it and the base fell out.

Basically it has a hardboard base which slides into two grooves along the sides, and it is not, on ours, quite wide enough so that when it inevitably shifts slightly to one side, the edges remain safely in the grooves - the ede of ours just came out at one side, and then the rest of the base followed.

Luckily no one was injured but I have reported it to John Lewis who say they will investigate.

I don't know how to make ours safe, still working on that - but as I got it second hand there's not much I can do.

So if you have one please, please do check that you can't wiggle the base board too far to one side, making it potentially really dangerous for babies.

Hopefully it was just a one off manufacturing issue but I cannot see anything actually wrong with it, to indicate damage - so I think it came like this.

Btw posting about it now as baby has just arrived and I took it out of storage to test again, and see if I could make it safe - but I don't think I can. I rang JL when I first knew there was a problem but no one took a note of it, this time I made sure I got a call ref and so on, they took it more seriously.

It's not warped. It's just not wide enough.

I didn't complain, I told them so that they could investigate and potentially recall it or warn people so that another baby won't be hurt.

I don't get how I've offended you, I was trying to do the right thing. My 4yo only put one foot in it, gently - not his full weight.

It comes out easily when no one is in it.

and yes, I could fit a larger piece of wood, if I can just figure out how to disassemble the crib, which doesn't look particularly easy.

and now I feel crap and stupid for even posting.

I'm sorry, I only saw there was a fault with the other cot, not what had happened as a result. Really dreadful.

It's definitely not warped.

It's just too narrow. And I have just tested it with ds3, and the same thing happened (controlled conditions obvs). He is 5 weeks old.

The base has the original label on it, it's not been replaced.

and what on earth would I have to gain by finding issue with it? It's not like I'm going to get a refund or something. I could have taken it back to the woman who sold it to me but she looked very harrassed with two tiny girls who kept throwing nappies and rying, that I didn't want to go back and cause her any more grief.

I had this crib with my dc and the same thing happened to me. This was due to me storing hospital bag and car seat in it the run up to the birth

I agree it's poorly designed but also agree that a much heavier child (or my luggage)shouldnt have been put in it.

Who's crying? Ds3? Did he fall out? Is he ok?

The thing is though, the base doesn't bend at all. It doesn't curve or give and then fall out. It just shifts sideways a bit and that's enough to make it come out of the groove, which if it was slightly wider, it wouldn't be able to.

I always assumed products designed to hold small babies would be tested up to a significant weight limit...not just a standard issue 6 month old and no more. fwiw ds2 is tiny for his age, weighs very little and as I said he only put in one foot.

Sorry this happened to you too, Farmer. Do you think the base on yours did warp due to the extra weight?

I got mine about 4.5 yrs ago and it was also 2nd hand but afaic remember it wasn't warped..think the base just slid out of the brackets, only in one corner so it wasnt that the whole base dropped out.

Dh fixed it easily enough but i cant remember how.

Thanks...it sounds like ours in that respect, just the one corner comes out,then the rest can follow if you don't notice.

I really hope JL will investigate - it would be awful if a baby fell out or got itself trapped.

glad you managed to fix it - I will go and buy a new bit of wood I think.

Just done an advanced search and it turns out Iseesmallpeople isn't Showy.

Showy is Iseethreadpeople. Sometimes. I thought this was her.
