i think i like it but there is something i cant put my finger on that im just not sure about.
dd 1 is 5 and dd2 is 2 probably looking at getting a bunk within the next 12 months however im not a fan of how traditional bunks look i also am not keen on very high top bunks. i quite like the wider 'stairs' rather than a ladder and i like built in storage

any thought on this bed or alternatives will be much appreciated :)

I like the stairs on it but I think the lower bunk is the problem. I can see constant squabbles about it because the top bunk kid wants the desk out and the other wants to play on their bed

Do you need bunks?

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 03/05/2012 22:14

I think it works as an occasional bed but it wil be a pain on a regular basis and you will probably end up leaving the bottom bed pulled out the whole time (could they then roll out in the night so they are on the floor under the top bunk?)

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 03/05/2012 22:19

How about;

a triple sleeper - gives a soft landing from the top bunk and if you have guests it gives you more sleeping space

ellliebelle · 03/05/2012 22:22

we will need bunks at some point in the future as we are expecting dc3 and they will all be sharing a bedroom, i think it is the bottom bunk that i have an issue with maybe we could remove the desks if they caused problems in the future

we would probably have the bottom bunk pulled out the whole time sleepy in your opinion would dd rolling out and being under the bunk be a lot worse than just rolling out on to the floor?

sleepy i have only found triple sleepers with conventional ladders and im not a big fan

also quite like this www.gltc.co.uk/fcp/product/-/bedroom_furniture_bunk_beds/Harbour-Storage-Bunk-Bed/10000000714

but again there is something putting me off

How about this one
I bet its not much higher than your original one, and the steps are proper steps not just bars. I agree that bars just get annoying after a while, and aren't particularly safe!

Might sound/look strange, but how about this mid sleeper with a junior bed underneath (acting as low bunks) or with the bottom of a single underneath to make it into an 'L' shape?

FWIW, I actually really like the original bed - but just trying to give you more options. Love the stairs on it - and would be good for your DD1 to be able to use the desk etc in privacy whilst DD2 is still a bit small to be playing in room.

I can see sleepyeyed 's point with the falling into the hole, but I suppose you would have to fashion some kind of bed guard to stop your DD2 disappearing!

KateShmate · 03/05/2012 22:27

Oooh love that second link OP - my only concern would be that the sides aren't very high on the top bunk.
Love the stairs though!

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 03/05/2012 22:31

I love the Harbour Bed - if I had the ceiling height my DS would love it. It gives you a proper lower bunk which I think is better With your first link you are just doubling the width of the bed unnecessarily

I think you can get extensions to the sides for the top bunk but not sure where I've seen them

Also like the Thuka Kate suggested

I just think she might be scared if she got stuck in a big hole and might struggle to get out in a half asleep daze! Or she won't wake up and you'll spend half an hour with your heart in your mouth trying to find her!!

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 03/05/2012 22:32

check out the Vista on GLTC as well

ellliebelle · 03/05/2012 22:32

Just found this - A thing you should also add is a new safety guideline which is unknown by many that a room that has a bunk bed should have a separate fire alarm as of the height of the top bunk and smoke rises smoke will be easier to consume the lungs in a house fire if that was to occur

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 03/05/2012 22:38

Oh that is fab - I can see why you want it! It doesn't seem that much more expensive than some other bunks. maybe they would take an offer!

EverybodysSleepyEyed · 03/05/2012 22:40

Oh - and his campervan is great too!

KateShmate · 04/05/2012 17:30

Wow, OP I love that ebay one!
Definitely not cheap, but I guess the price means that its good quality and will last.

Have been looking around - found this one and can't believe how cheap (ish!) it is considering what it is. this one

I know it looks very girly and princessy, but if thats not your taste then I think you can change everything on it - colour etc.
