What I've found easiest is to use fitted sheets (make sure you get the right size for your basket), with a muslin square tucked in under where your baby's head will be, so you can change the muslin easily when they dribble.

Up to around eight weeks we swaddled DD in a flat Moses basket sheet or swaddling wrap, with one or two layers of cellular blanket tucked in over her depending on the room temperature. We used a blanket similar to this swaddling blanket but you can use a flat sheet if you don't want the added expense.

After eight weeks we had her in a 0-6 months sleeping bag, normally 2.5 tog but 1 tog if it was particularly warm overnight.

I'd recommend 3 fitted sheets, 3 swaddles/flat sheets and 3 cellular blankets but 2-4 is fine depending on how often you need to wash them, and at least 6-8 muslin squares to begin with. Plain white is good as you can wash them at 60 degrees - some coloured muslin squares will dye your wash at 60 degrees as I know from bitter experience.

The main rule is not to overheat your baby - too few layers is better than too many.

You could use pillow cases instead of special Moses basket fitted sheets - we did.
