Cots and beds

This topic is for discussing cots and beds. We've spent weeks researching and testing newborn beds in real homes with real families.

Ideas for bed guard for very small bed?

Hoping someone can help, I'm out of ideas.

DS had a dropside cot, and because I'm pregnant I wanted to remove the dropside completely so I didn't have to lift him in and out. Also he's 2.4 so thought he was ready.

My problem is, I can't seem to find a bed guard that will work for this scenario. Most seem to be the type that fit under the mattress, and won't work with mattresses that are only 60cm across. I looked at a BabyDan wooden one that I think just clamps on, but it's so wide, DS would hardly have any room to get into bed (cot is 120cm long, rail is 90cm long).

I found some bolster fitted sheets, but again the bed needs to be at least a cotbed size or larger, and even adapted they'd take up a lot of his sleeping area.

I can't afford a toddler bed. Even though I could probably get the frame cheap or free, it would need a new mattress and then new sheets which would be difficult at the moment.

The plan is to keep him in his cot with the side off until November (he'll be 3.2), and then DH's bonus can pay for bunk beds. DS would start on lower bunk, and move up to the top when DC2 is ready for a big bed and goes in the lower one.

Help? Anyone? At the moment we have a big pile of pillows next to the bed and the drop is only about 10 inches, but I'd like something a bit more permanent.

I'm not sure I would worry too much, a pile of pillows seems fine to me, you do need DS to be able to get out to the toilet (assuming you have done potty training) so don't make it too tricky. The other cheap solution is to put a duvet cover horizontally and tuck in.
