Cots and beds

This topic is for discussing cots and beds. We've spent weeks researching and testing newborn beds in real homes with real families.

Bedside cot or normal cot with side removed?

First baby due in a couple of months and thinking about sleeping arrangements. Rather than a moses basket I think I'd quite like to have a cot that fits up against our bed so we are close and have easy access in the night. Do I actually need one of these "bedside cots" that the side railings slide down underneath, or can I just use a normal cot and take one of the sides off until they are ready to sleep on their own? Obviously we'd have to be sure the mattresses were at the correct levels but apart from that is there any reason not to use a normal cot without a fourth side?

Thanks
