Help with revarnishing M&P cot/bed!

Hi. I have been very generously given a M&P Ocean cot / bed in golden oak. Unfortunatley it is a bit battered and bruised and needs some revarnishing (1st child - aiming for perfection at this stage - although imagine it will not last!), and I wondered if anyone had revarnished the same furniture and what colour / brand I should be using?

I refinished one.

All I did was rubbed it over with some white spirit and wire wool (wear rubber gloves!). Then I painted mine pale blue satin with navy blue and white bits on the corners. But you could easily use varnish. Just make sure you use a very fine brush, stand it on newspaper while you varnish it, and don't worry about the bubbles, because they settle out as it dries.

Thank you for your help with this. Will try plain varnish - and then paint if I make a mess.
