I'm not I hasten to add - but my parents are several bits of kit have died/become wobbly/lost functions & they are replacing as their pressies for each other this Christmas

I have been charged with finding the best 'deals' so before or after Christmas? Small retailer or biG?

TIA

I would wait till after christmas, and buy the things in the sales.

TinselinaBumsquash · 27/11/2009 19:01

After Xmas big places like Currys and Comet do Boxing day sales and then the January sales come along to. I would wait tbh.

Hassled · 27/11/2009 19:01

Big retailers, 26th December. That's my advice, for what it's worth!

ChasingSquirrels · 27/11/2009 19:03

if in the after xmas sales, then pre 1 Jan when VAT goes back up.

nancy75 · 27/11/2009 19:06

i think it depends what you want to buy, staple goods like washing machines dont really get reduced that much in the sales, it is probably worth going to a big curry/comet type place and asking what kind of discount they would give you for buying mutiple items. most retailers are not expecting a bumper xmas this year so i wouldn't be suprised if most sales start before xmas anyway. another tip is always go in to shops towards the end of the week - if they have a weekly target to achieve they won't want to let you and your £1000 walk out the door, so may do you a good deal.

whomovedmychocolate · 27/11/2009 19:10

I agree with Nancy, does depend entirely on what you want to buy.

Also buy online through cashback sites like Quidco and you can get back up to 15% from some retailers. Even better, pay with a cashback credit card and you can end up taking off 20%!

If you want to go into stores, don't be afraid to ask them to do you a deal if you are buying a few things.

If you are buying Apple gear - but it today they have a one day sale - I just got DH an iPod Touch for £50 off and through Quidco so I'll get even more off that through the cashback.

Katymac · 27/11/2009 19:12

Oh how awkward - I am away then (Boxing Day)

It's not white stuff it's a laptop, some sort of recordable TV thingie (they used to be videos, then DVDs who knows what they are called now) & possibly a Wii for DD

TBH I think they will be lucky to do it for £1K but we will see

we're in the same boat... we need a new tv and could do with a microwave and deep fat frier as we have neither and with 3 kids both would be a godsend.

we're waiting for the sales

Katymac · 27/11/2009 19:14

WMMC I would love to buy them the apple version of a laptop but they only just understand Windows etc & the budget would collapse

Tescos have some great deals on tvs at the minute and do very reasonable laptops plus you get clubcard points ....maybe check them out online?

Katymac · 27/11/2009 21:25

Thanks

Katymac - I don't understand the Mac operating system either but that's not stopped me using it for five years . It doesn't crash or hang. Period. What's not to like. You plug stuff into it and it just recognises it and gets on with this.

But they are very expensive I agree.

Katymac · 27/11/2009 22:07

Sigh - it's a nice idea

Are you using the same laptop (for 5 yrs)? actually if so you are doing better than me I am about to buy my 3rd

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 28/11/2009 18:23

Yep, same one. Tis much dirtier but works just the same. You can buy Apple Macbooks at the outlet store online for up to 30% off list price (they are overstocks or returns but they are all tested and 'as new' condition). Mine came from there. It is well worth it. But if you buy one, go through Quidco and get cashback as well then you can cut 8% more off the purchase price

Katymac · 28/11/2009 18:32

Where is the outlet store....I can't find it Is it on the apple site

OP posts:
whomovedmychocolate · 28/11/2009 18:38

store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/specialdeals/mac?mco=MTM3NDY2NTI It moves around

Katymac · 28/11/2009 18:43
