I honestly had no idea how beautiful Bath was until I came here. I’ve absolutely loved it! The city centre is stunning, with amazing shops, restaurants, and gorgeous architecture everywhere you look.

I drove through a little area called Twerton and stopped at the corner shop £3.00 for a tiny loaf of bread. While I was there, I had a look at the local house prices and was genuinely shocked. The cheapest house I found was around £270,000, and it needed loads of work. In many other parts of the country, a house like that would probably be closer to £120,000.

I also looked at local job salaries, and they seem really low compared to the cost of housing. It honestly made me wonder how do people afford to live here? House prices range from around £270,000 for a fairly ordinary home needing renovation to £9 million for some of the city’s most incredible properties.

Bath is one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited, but I really feel for local people trying to get on the property ladder.

Many peole in Bristol and Bath commute to London (or have jobs with a London and SW hub, so work between the 2).

Twerton is one of the more affordable areas of Bath! Instead of a loaf of Warbies you should have gone to the bakery. In addition to lovely bread they make dangerously good lardy cakes

Believe me I have explored the sights the restaurants and cafes are amazing this was a late night call for bread to go back to our lodge. I particular loved this little place.

Iv just come back from a few nights in Bath and loved it! My brother studied and worked in Bath in the early 80s and still regrets not buying a home and settling there.
Your right it's very expensive. We stayed in Batheaston which is gorgeous but I couldn't afford to live there.
Highlights of my trip were the independent bookshops, particularly Toppings and the Persephone book store.
And the ice cream shops! There are so many.

I live near Bath, it’s lovely but unaffordable for many. My DP is from Bath originally - some areas are pretty grotty! Twerton, Redland Park etc are not what people will think of if you said you live in Bath but much more realistic. No one except millionaires can afford to live in Royal Crescent etc lol.

I've always wanted to go to Bath as everyone says its lovely but then I found out that all the nice architecture and wealth was all borne out of the slave trade so unsurprisingly I'm not as keen anymore.

I suggested we didn’t look at Bath for this very reason. Get him in one Up North and save yourself a few quid 😅

I have to say that I was mighty relieved that DD did not like the university when we visited for the open day.

Yes, this is worrying. DS has his mind fixed on Bath next year. We visited a few weeks ago. He loved it.
I guess the house price will reflect student rents.

We lived in Bath city centre for a time and we loved it. But we moved because the anti social behaviour was getting worse, houses all around us were being turned into party houses and making neighbours lives hell, and also because we knew our kids would have to leave if they ever wanted to get onto the property ladder. We live in the Scottish Borders and my daughter bought a two bed detached house with a tiny garden in the countryside for £160,000. At the time, a lot of Londoners on London salaries moved to Bath and commuted in, but we haven't lived there for 10 years. A friend of mine who is a local, still lives there and is feeling rather lonely as all the people she grew up with have left to get on the housing ladder, or sold up Bath properties to move to a cheaper part of the country. We had fun while we lived there and I still miss the beautiful Georgian house we sold, but I don't think I would move back.

Indeed. Dd shares a flat and rent is £700 each excluding bills.

I imagine that's the case for pretty much any city.

Times that by 10 for London prices (at least!).

I’ve lived about 10 miles from Bath my whole life and I honestly don’t get what the hype is. The traffic is horrendous, the property prices are ridiculous and there aren’t that many jobs available unless you want to work in tourism or a shop. I mean it’s pretty in places but so are a lot of older cities.

Did you try Mokoko? Beautiful food, but sky high prices.

Sadly many areas of the West Country are full of DFLs (Down From London) who can sell up and move to somewhere pretty & with character, thus inflating the house prices.

We are going in October. One of the top universities for his course is only down the road (Manchester) but he wasnt keen. Im hoping he doesn't love this one if its expensive.

My DD is at uni in Manchester and her accommodation costs have been eye watering. Seems to be the case in any city with a decent university.

My son’s accommodation at Imperial College in London was cheaper than the equivalent student accommodation at Bath. I did love the area though.

Yes my daughter and partner have just paid 10 times that for a 3 bed!

there are plenty of people on good pay here, plenty of professional jobs mostly in Bristol, people commute. Prices are rising also due to the wfh/office once a week moving down from London. I can assure you though if you go in Tesco express in Bath bread costs the same as everywhere else, not sure where you went - Mokoko? (most delicious sourdough but to be savoured, not every day bread!) I live in a satellite town and it’s about £450k for a 3 bed hence people moving here from more expensive places so they can be mortgage free

DD has just graduated from uni of Bath Spa. She spent a year in halls in Twerton. Luckily she received almost full Student loan because as you say, beautiful but eye wateringly expensive!

It’s the same literally everywhere in the southern half of England and other Parts of Britain I’m sure as well.

Yes, DD also paid £700 pcm for a second year house share ( excluding bills!!)
