OH paid £6 for my namesake

Sainsbury's call them wild garlic something or other and kyiv instead of kiev (huh?) but even so, OUCH.

I hope they taste like spun gold.

He has ADHD and it wouldn't occur to him to look at the price. He tends to only study the price of extortionate gluten free food when he wants to whinge about prices (£3.60 loaves of bread - we have neither the space or reliable equipment to bake ourselves but mostly I just don't have storage for more stuff).

Anyway, even I wouldn't dream of two kievs being more than four quid and I probably wouldn't have looked at the price myself. I know they were £2 in 2020, it was the peak of my kiev eating frenzy.

(I prefer schnitzel these days)

Have you had any nasty shocks yourself lately?

Huh?

BlossomLeaves · 03/12/2025 15:42

Kyiv is the Ukrainian translation whereas Kiev is translated from the Russian alphabet so given the situation most are trying to use the Ukrainian version where possible.

Kiev became Kyiv because of the war in Ukraine. Kyiv is the capital city of Ukraine which is called Kiev in Russian. Definitely appropriate to update that word don’t you think?

Isn’t Schnitzel pork?

Oh I see, M and S used to make an Issey Miyake perfume dupe called Isis. I never could find it again after it was renamed.

Thanks for the explanation. I just assumed they were trying to be poncey, so it is good to know.

Yes, schnitzel is pork. I went off kyivs a few years back after having a couple of not nice ones from Morrisons, found the excellent schnitzel in Lidl and have been unfaithful ever since.

I hope you aren't in for a nasty shock, OP. We had Kiev with wild garlic, can't remember where from, and it was vile. Stuffed with grassy garlicky leaves. (Presumably that's the wild garlic).
I much prefer the bog standard stuff with ordinary garlic butter inside. Best of luck.

Theunamedcat · 03/12/2025 15:49

Try the M&S range they are really nice for gluten free occasionally ouch on the prices but some are in line with everyone else

Oh, god!

I like the cheap ones too.

Sounds like he is in for a 16 mile round trip to Lidl for schnitzel then! Maybe it will annoy him enough to have him actually look at prices next time?

Sadly we only have access to one small m and s and it does very little GF food. Which is upsetting because I see folks post delicious GF stuff in my groups all the time :(

I’ve had these kyivs and various other more expensive ones from the butchers too and DH and I have come to the conclusion that we are heathens and only really like the cheapo ones.

I am a heathen too. I like my (mostly cheap) food not to taste poncey.

Lessons have been learned. It's sausage butties for tea instead.

They are a firm favourite of mine, the max I'll pay is £4 for the chicken breast ones. The Lidl ones are my favourites now but I will buy Sainsbury's if on offer.

Getting him to notice things is really hard work. I once had to put tow signs up to get him to stop wiping his toothpaste laden face on the hand towel every day. Would you like to guess how that ended.

A4. He didn't notice them.

So, there is hope yet? Most own brand Morrisons stuff is absolutely dire these days, so maybe it was just them.

No hope! Get white towels and use white toothpaste!

I had a complete and utter meltdown.

It still didn't work.

But he doesn't do it anymore. I have no idea why and I doubt he would be able to tell you either.

Gotta love ADHD 🤬😢😒

(it's very delibitating for him so I let a lot of things slide these days)

@NotbloodyGivingupYet I had these for lunch yesterday instead of ruining a dinner. They were quite nice. The garlic flavour was more subtle than usual kyivs. That said, I wouldn't pay £6 for them again unless they were the only packet in the supermarket and my craving was completely overwhelming.

No big, inedible leaves! Phew.

(done in an air fryer which did a smashing job of crisping them nicely too)

These are part of their £15 meal deal atm. I got them last week with a side dish, dessert and bottle of wine which made them feel much cheaper!

That makes sense then, meal deal items always have a ridiculous price to buy separately so the combo deal seems better value

Schnitzel is veal

Traditionally yes, but when buying it in a UK supermarket it will invariably be pork or chicken.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/12/2025 13:25

Davros · 05/12/2025 13:19

Schnitzel is veal

It’s more the thin cut/flattened than breaded cooking style rather than a specific type of meat. Veal is traditional but pork is common too.

Breakitinto3 · 05/12/2025 13:26

Wiener schnitzel is veal. In general shnitzel can be any meat depending on which country one eats it. It's even from mince somewhere.
Basically, breaded meat slice = schnitzel

ErrolTheDragon · 05/12/2025 13:31

Anyway, OP, let’s never try swapping husbands. Mine does most of the shopping, his choice of kyivs are these
https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/no1-parmigiano-reggiano-truffle-chicken-kyiv/822077-790961-790962

…imo delicious. I’d rather have those occasionally and eat more beans on other days than have cheap chicken. (Actually he can’t eat cheap chicken, there’s something he’s got an aversion to probably down to what they’re fed he reckon).

Whippets81 · 05/12/2025 13:31

Honestly - I too love a Kyiv but I’ve always been really disappointed in the poncey ones - I don’t like the super cheap ones either just the middle of the road Sainsbury’s ones. I think most places have renamed them Kyivs now.
